I think I read somewhere, likely on terb, that some of you have had great success in negotiating with Rogers to reduce your cable bill. The successful tactic was to compare what Bell was offering for less money. So I now have in hand a rather remarkable offer from Bell. I don't really want to change cable carriers, but I would like to pay less with Rogers. So my question is: What is the best way to go about it? Call Rogers and ask to cancel my service? Or is it better to point out that I have been a good customer for many years and given the lower rates of their competitors, I feel I am being taken advantage of? I'm just wondering what the best buttons are to push in order to get my discount. Anyone out there actually tried it? What was your approach?

Don't tell them you want to leave as they might call your bluff. Just say you have/see this offer from xxx and it's being considered. If you have some beefs with the service you're getting, like disrupted service, my favorite since you pay for the service in advance, or regular errors in billing, then it strengthens your position.

Call customer retention and tell them you are thinking of leaving and whats the best they can do.
Get an offer and see if they'll beat it, usually they will.

I did it with bell, no threats or complaints, just asked nicely and they dropped my bill in half.

I would pay a 10% premium for any service that isn't Rogers. I hate that company. I've had numerous problems with their services popping up over and over again, and since switching to bell (at close to the same price for the same package) I haven't had any of those problems.

Go straight to the cancellation people as they are the only ones who can do anything. Don't spend hours getting the run around being bounced to one dept to the next. Been there, done that.
Also when the promo period is up call them back and try to get fresh promotions.

Give it time, they'll get to you. I refuse to deal with either of them any more...

It's so f##k'd up... I just got what I think is a great deal from Rogers with an 8 year guarantee, so I switched yesterday.
I'll never last that long, of course. Technology will make me need a change without being able to grandfather the deal long before that.

There's a article in the toronto sun today about cable tv.There were 250 000 fewer cable subscribers from cancelling their service last year and this year their expecting more.So i say don't matter who you get your sure to get a great deal.Go to the toronto sun and read the article.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I called Rogers and told them I have a much better offer from Bell. The CSR put me through to the Promotions Dept. In the end, they took about $20 a month off of my cable tv bill. Its good for 2 years and they threw in 3 months of free movie channels.

I realize this goes against what several of you suggested i.e. go directly to retention dept or cancellation dept. Maybe I could have gotten a better deal if I had gone that route, or gotten all angry and pissed off with them to make them think I would cancel unless they gave me a better price. But I am happy with the outcome. So thanks again for your help.

Actually, it was Rogers that pro-actively called me about 4 years ago to offer a 20% (since raised to 30%) discount. They said it was a reward for being such a long and loyal customer.

One is not better than the other, once in a while I do call which ever I am with and tell them I am going to the other company. That is when they give you the special prices and 3 months off deals.

I switched from one to the other because of shitty rates and TERRIBLE service. Turns out, once the dust settled, my rates were just as shitty and the service was even worse at my new home. But at least there were endless weeks of hassle migrating my number over. Really, you are making a choice between a shit sandwich and a turd omelette.

Recently I was sent two offers for faster internet service from Bell for my business service. One was a 3 year term and one was a 1 year term. Yesterday I called to see what other promos are available and they gave me an upgraded speed for a 1 year term that knocked my bill in half. No way I was taking a 3 year term as you are stuck at that speed for too long. The rate after a year is a joke so I will have to re-shop it then.

Here is a thread I started about exactly the same thing I had about a year ago with Rogers vs. Bell.

https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?382007-Bell-Fibe-or-Rogers-Digital/page2&highlight=rogers

I stuck with Rogers, but they did sort of lie to me. They quoted 80 some odd a month plus tax, but there is some other BS fee on there that gets tacked on.

Bottom line I believe is about 92.00 a month for 2 boxes, HD everything, more channels than I can count (or am even interested in watching), but most importantly, The Movie Network - which I love. HBO is worth it. The On Demand Features are great.

Pay per view porn is lame though, 10 bucks a movie for shit movies. Better just to go to your local spunk store and rent a porn DVD when the mood hits you.

Tell them you want to speak to the "Retention Dept." Be prepared to tell them how long you have been a customer, itemized problems with service, billing etc. Then tell them that their competition (Rogers or Bell) have a very good package and you are very tempted to switch. I recently saved 20% with Bell and even have upgraded packages. Be firm, but never raise your voice or show anger. Good luck.

Wait for the other guy to come up with a promo campaign (which they do every couple of months). then call your carrier and say "do better". They will.

With similar tactics and as outlined earlier you should regularly be able to get 33% off, if you're good long term customer in good standing. I'm trying for 50%, but no luck.No need to tie up for three years, but it means you have to go through the same routine every year when the 'special' is over.
