Hey everyone,

Not sure how many people use Rogers and their news server to download movies etc.. but I have a question.

Anyone else notice it's really.. really slow these last few days? I called them and they told me they've changed their service for improvements and they have a constant speed of 256k. (which appears to be about 2% of how fast it used to go)

Anyone else have more info? I've complained, has anyone else?

Rinardo.

It's been good to know ya
Rogers

Personnally I do not use that but do not like any of Rogers new changes ie.. Rogers/Yahoo etc.. I preffer to use my outlook and their new system messed that all up on me, so I messed up my Rogers and do not care if they are my home page or not at sign in. I now have msn up. I do not need my mail going to 3 different addresses. Now I have my outlook back up and running properly again and got rid of the new mail boxes finally.

I'm with Rogers. I can't stand that company by the way. I can download 4.4GB movies from their news server in about 6 hours. I haven't really noticed a difference in the speed lately. Sometimes it's a little faster or a little slower.

I HATE ROGERS! They're all assholes.

* Tyler1, you haven't noticed anything? I'm surprised, I'm litterally downloading at 10% or less of what I used to. Something that that would normally done downloading in 3 hours now takes like 18 hours. They told me they implimented this new thing on the 20th.

This is the reply I got from Rogers.
As we do appreciate your concerns regarding your degraded performance with the Rogers news service, please be advised that the move to GigaNews was implemented to offer much greater stability with the news service. Although there is some drawbacks to speeds, we feel that the content by far offers more advantages.

NOTE : The speeds are 256 Kbps (Kilo bits per second). With two
simultaneous connections, this provides an aggregate of 512 kbps, to provide consistent download speeds to all users.

* And yes.. I hate them too. I've only come accross one decent guy in the 3 years since moving to Toronto.

The only speed difference I've noticed with newsgroups is my refresh rate. When I first started I could refresh extremely fast. Now it can take 1-1.5 hrs during peak times. Very late at night and early morning is quite fast though. I hear rogers does this to deter you from downloading too much. As long as they don't change my download rate I'll be happy.

*I hate them more.

Just got off the phone with tech support

Me: I notice your newsgroups are really slow now.
Tech: Yes we know that.
Me: Is there something i need to change or did you change something?
Tech: We changed.
Me: Your service is really slow now.
Tech: Yes we know that.
Me: Are you fixing it.
Tech: Soon.
Me: What does that mean?
Tech: When the transition is done. We're polishing it up.
Me: When will it be done.
Tech: Soon.
Me: Do you have any idea when that will be?
Tech: When the transition is done. We're polishing it up.
Me: Do you have any idea when that is?
Tech: Soon.
Me: So i just have to wait while your service is slow?
Tech: Yes, sorry.

Anyhow, you get the idea.

Well something has changed. I was downloading something last night and then it said "message no longer availalbe on server" so I re-downloaded the entire list of headers and it said there were over 400,000. Normally there might be 10-20,000 at the most.

So it looks like everything is available since the begining of September. WOOOHOOO Oh wait.. I've downloaded most of it already. oh well...

And the speed is improving. Seems almost back to normal. Hopefully they got a ton of complaints and decided to change things.

Oddly enough, I've been a lurker on this board for a couple of years and this is my first post because I feel THIS is an important subject. :p

I'm experiencing the exact same issues with the newsgroups. I've noticed with Rogers that on several occaissions when their service went down I asked for a credit and they gave one without question... has anyone tried this with the news service?

The switch is complete... man it takes a long time to get the headers the first time you do so. Speed isn't what it used to be (consistent now atleast) but thats the trade-off for the super long retention I guess.
