Rogers iPhone Plan Question

On my current iPhone I currently pay $65/month for 6 GB of data and a Talk & Text Plan with 150 weekday minutes and unlimited evening/weekend. It's a legacy plan that's no longer offered.

I'm looking at buying the new iPhone SE and am running the numbers.

Buying a phone flat out is $709 (I'm leaving taxes out of this). If I can combine that with my existing plans it works out to $2269 over 2 years and then the monthly charge is only $65 going forward.

With a 2-year plan it's only $130 but I have to get a new data/talk plan that would run around $105/month for 5 GB of data and unlimited talk & text. That works out to $2650 over 2 years and then $105/month going forward. In other words, RIPOFF.

Anyone know if I can combine my existing data and talk/text plan with a new phone if I buy it outright? Or do I have to change data plans?

p.s., Yes, I know Rogers sucks. But within the confines of Rogers, I'm looking at options.

With Bell you can stick with your old plan when getting a new phone (I have the same plan from '02, I don't get much data, but with wifi everywhere it has not been a big issue for me). Obviously you still have to sign up for a 2-3 contract to get the phone discount. Did the sales rep tell you that you have to get a new plan? If so, I'd try going to another store or speak to another store rep, and go in with the assumption that you are allowed to stick with your old plan.

If you buy the phone outright you get to keep your 6gb plan for good. It's the only way to do it. This is assuming you don't live in Thunder Bay or another cellphone plan hot spot. I work for a major telecom. Some people I help have the same plan since 2001, but they are smaller data plans if at all and can keep the same plan.

You only have to change you Rogers plan if your enter into a new contract. If your contract is up, just buy a new iPhone and move the chip over to the new phone as it will probably fit. You may need to call Rogers to tell them your switching phones as each phone has a unique identifier for access to their network. They could confirm that for you. But there is no need to change your plan.

They'll try to sell you on it but remember plans are 2 years now and they factor in the "discount" of $20 per month for a new phone with a plan. As your not getting them to subsidize your new phone, you're good to go.

Yes, buy a phone and just insert your SIM card and you're good to go. If your old card doesn't work, you can get one from their site or a Rogers store and get it activated. Plan change isn't necessary!

Thanks everyone.

Is there any upside to new SIM card vs using my old one?
No upside. You would only need a new sim if you're coming from an Iphone 4(s) . The newer SIM cards have NFC but are not needed for Apple Pay because it's built into the device

I have an iPhone 4. Does that mean Apple Pay won't work?

Yup, only works with iPhone 6 and up...
I know that. :encouragement: I'm buying the new SE.

The question is, does having an old SIM card not work with Apple Pay?

EDIT: So I see that I have the Micro-SIM and the SE uses the Nano-SIM. Can I exchange SIM cards with Rogers without changing my data plan?

Yes just buy the sim card from Rogers and then either use your online account to change the sim card number associated with your phone number or just call rogers customer service and say you bought a new phone and you need to change the sim card number that is on your account. Changing the sim card does nothing to the plan at all. People sometimes have defective sim cards, very standard practice to have to have one changed.

Depending on how old the old sim card is, you may need a new sim card for any of the following reasons
i) physical size (nano vs micro vs mini)
ii) LTE support (some older sim cards might not support LTE mode)

No downside to getting a new sim card. You can do the sim card transfer whenever you like via MyRogers, at a Rogers wireless dealer or over the phone with no impact to your current plan.

Rogers does not suck however your plan sucks. Been with them for like 20 years so I guess it pays off.

$55 all in incl. taxes
5 GB
Unlimited text
200 Long distance minutes
300 day minutes
Unlimited evening and weekends and weekdays after 6pm

Had this plan for over 3 years now.

Not compared to the plans they're offering now. You'd be paying around $105 for that now, plus tax.

Like me, you're on one of the old legacy plans that they don't offer anymore. If you try to switch plans with them, which is a requirement for any phone discounted with a 2-year plan, they won't honour your old plan anymore.

Not really alot of newer plans are really good just most people are stupid

2 plans that are advertised today that I think are pretty decent (and way fucking better than most of the crap posted above)
Drawback is neither comes with a free iPhone but do you really want your device locked to Rogers anyways?

$45 - unlimited North America calling, 6GB data, unlimited txt
$40 - unlimited Canadian calling, 1GB data, unlimited txt

Telus has best deals in town right now though, puts Bell & Rogers to shame

To close the loop on this, I kept my plan and bought an unlocked phone. Restored all my data and then had Rogers activate my new SIM card. Everything works fine.

Thanks for the help folks!
