Here's the short story - Roger's free Digital TV for two months offer is a scam, avoid at all costs....

Here's the long story....

About the end of may, i happened to be home during the day when this rogers door to door sales guy comes round.

Wants to know if i would like to try rogers internet service. I say thanks, but i am very happy with my Sympatico HSE. He keeps pushing, telling me, I can have 2 free months of Rogers Internet if i switch, but i say no thanks.

Then he asks me if i would like to try Rogers Digital TV for 2 months for FREE.

Key word - FREE.

I say, sure, why not, lets see what this is all about...

He tells me, look, for two months Rogers will let you preview all their digital channels for free, so reduce your cable package from whatever to just basic, because this digital preview comes with "Everything", so save the cable upgrade fees during the 2 months.

Anyway, they come to hook this thing up, and don't really show youy how to use it. Like for example how to programme your VCR.

Normally, your VCR is hooked up first.

With the digital box, you hookup the digital box first, then the VCR. In order to run your VCR, you have to program your digiatal box somehow.

A pain in the ass.

Then, I discovered that this preview did not include any of the movie channels, that if i wanted the movie channels, i would have to pay.

This despite being told that my priew included "EVERYTHING" for "FREE" for 2 months.

I call up Rogers to ask WTF, and they say, no the offer doesn't include the movie channels. or Playboy, but that if i wanted to, I could have them at half price for the 2 month period too.

I opted for movies, declined Playboy (I hate hefner's idea of the beautiful woman - big hairspray hair, big fake tits, the all american look - yech)

Anyway, it's not an easy set up to work with, and the VCR thing is a real pain in the ass, but i figure, WTF.

Then, i figure, i better call up rogers to make sure they reduce my bill to just basic cable during this special offer. They say, yep, it's all reduced, no problem.

Well, today i get my bill.........

You see where this is going.

My bill, which was normally about 43 bucks a month, came in at 78 bucks.

This despite everything being "FREE"

I knew that this would happen, that there was some scam in there somewhere.

First, they never reduced my bill to basic like they said they would and subsequently confirmed they had.

Second, they are charging me rental on this digital box of 9 bucks a month.

And third, these idiotic movie channels all seem to be one on top of another.

So i call Rogers, steam coming out of my nostrils....

"Oh no sir, you are mistaken, you get the digital channels for free for two months, but you still have to pay to rent the digital box"

"Who told you that you could reduce your cable package to basic? That's not the way it works"

"You have your digital channels and you have your regular channels."

Well, i am just short of throwing a connecting rod with this guy on the phone.

"Well, where the fuck can i take this box right this fucking instant. You can keep it"

"They are all closed sir"

"Well, you can cut me off right now"

I am not joking, i would have driven it over there at midnight and told them to shove it.

To me, Free means FREE. Not this is free, that you have to pay for (but we won't tell you), nor is that not included (and we won't tell you.)

About as clear as mud

What is crystal clear is my cable bill has doubled, this despite everything being fucking free.

Anyway, the thing is sitting by my front door in a loblaws bag ready to go back to the LYING, THIEVING, CHEATING, NO GOOD SCUM BAGS at Rogers.

First, the war with Consumers Gas, now Rogers TV.

Please provide info on satelite dishes - which to get, costs, pitfalls, do you still need basic cable??

I have no idea to tell you the truth.

These guys are gangsters and they know it. If you want cable you have no choice but to go through them. That is why I'm glad I screwed them for free cable for 6 years before they caught on.

satellite

Go for ExpressVU and try to get an older 2700 type receiver (COSTCO might still have some for $99). Then get a basic subscription for abour $20/month. Next, do a search for AVR3 on the web and you're set .... :D

I would recommend DirectTV, as it is a grey market dish you can pick up the dish and card for a couple hundred bucks, and then you just need to get the card programmed every so often.

Of if you can to pay for it instead you can get a US address and subscribe to DirecTV legit.

Nothing in canada compares to the channels they have, and the moves.

i'm liking expressvu

i got stung by rogers free preview promo last year, including their negative billing "you didn't call to unsubscribe after the 2 months, so we kept you going" scheme, as well as the customer friendly "you have to bring back all the "on loan" equip yourself...no, we don't accept couriers deliveries unless you've prepaid the delivery"
bell expressvu beats cable all to hell, given that you can pick single channels instead of bundled packages...not sure how it stacks up against other legit satellite carriers...but for $40 permonth, i have a great selection of channels that i hand picked...no filler...

here is the satellite "however" clause...if it's a good rain or snow storm outside, you lose the signal integrity and lose channels with it...

Rogers - They are the ULTIMATE assholes. I know I just said on another thread that I was going for one of their bundle packages, but stories like JTK's make me think again.

I had a similar experience with a guy from Rogers coming door to door selling Hi-Speed. He just out and out lied. The story he gave me was that I could 'Lock in" to Rogers Hi-Speed service for $25.00 per month. I was surprised because I had not heard of this deal, so I specifically asked him, "do you mean I pay 25.00 per month as an introductory rate for a few months and then go to the 45.00 a month? Or do you mean I get $25.00 a month as my permanent price for buying now?" This bastard swore that if I signed right then, the permanent price would be $25.00 a month. I made him repeat it three times, and my wife heard the whole thing. So I signed. The next week I come home and there's a message on my machine from Rogers saying that they were confirming my appointment to have the service installed at the INTRODUCTORY rate of $25.00. I called immediately. She ADMITTED that many people had the same complaint as mine!!

This is the type of thing you expect from a small company, but from someone the size of Rogers??? I cancelled - but dammit if I want to see the Sorpranos - they're the only game in town!!!

I have a question...

If I go bell express vu for 40 bucks a month, do i still need cable or an aerial, or what to catch local channels???

I love the Sopranos too, but I am sure that Season three will be in stores by Christmas.

Mind you, i guess you are after season 4.

4 door to door sales reps pushing digital over a 3 week period. Each one had a different story. I didn't get the real story until I went to the local retail outlet where I pay my bill.

I guess they were sick of irate customers because the lady there gave me the full story. You've got to have the ultimate package in the 'basic' analog service, rent the digital box for 9$ /month and then you can start to pick digital channels (or take the whole works for the reasonable price of $150 /month !!!

I said no thanks !

&^(*&^ I wish I could put up a dish but I'm in a condo wher they don't allow such things.

JTK - the min subscription for BEV is about $20, for all other programming it's easy to get a $50 AVR from one of the web vendors. Local coverage varies, I think GTA stations as well as those of most other Canadian cities are included in the basic package. If your particular local station is missing, you should be able to pick it up with the good old rabbit's ears. And, of course, Sopranos are in sync with HBO.... and free PPV & porn are always a bonus.

I've had a dish for about 4 years now, and very few disturbances due to bad weather ... definitely less than with Rogers cable many years ago.

for the $40 per month, you'd get all of the local stations, plus a bunch of others that you'd pick as themed bundles (sports, lifestyle, etc) or handpicked channels from each of the bundles...

Starchoice

I have the Starchoice system at my house. I've had it for over 2 years with no problems. I had wanted a system for awhile, and when Rogers pissed me off, I took the plunge and have never looked back.

For $68 a month, I have two receivers, get all basic and most of the premium channels (except for the last round of crap that got approved by the CRTC), TMN and Viewer's Choice, plus a couple of hundred digital music channels.

I would completely recommend the system and the service, and if I'm not mistaken, you can get a dish and receiver for $99 right now.

Lack of Competition

We will continue to receive poor services from these giant companies as long as they are the monopolies. I am glad Paul Martin did not allow the Chartered Banks to merge with one another. They already have extremely terrible services and numerous service charges. Just imagine what would happen when there is just one or two Chartered Banks left in the country.

Rogers can go to hell!!!

I fell for the two month free scam. When I got it, the box didn't work properly. Not all the channels would come in. Also, the box would turn on and off automatically. No joke. It was like having poltergist coming to life in my t.v. I also had had internet with rogers which turned out to be bullshit. They told me I'd have to pay extra if I wanted to network 2 pc's. Right then I told them to got to hell and went with bell. Afterwards i found there was a way to network them and the support staff never told me this info. In the short run, I got rid of digital cable and got directtv. Directtv is alot better more channels to choose from. Also, I can watch WWE raw with out stupid tsn cutting out all the good parts. Also, I can watch Different Strokes every morning on TNN. Did you know that the american channels here on cable cut out programming? yes it true. TNN does it with raw and different strokes. You can only watch it on the american direct tv version. Also, TV land is totally different too. I remember being at my girlfriends who has rogers digital and watching a weekend marathon but when i got home and turned on tv land it was regular programming on the direct tv version. Really Star Choice and Bell aren't my choice. Direct tv is because you don't have to worry about network cut and more variety of channels. Rogers just leaves your pockets empty. That's why companies such as rogers, bell, star choice are trying to get rid of direct tv cause it is the choice of most the people. The other satellite companies may be lower in price than cable but still can't measure up to direct tv.

Great, it isn't enough to have LE & the media scanning this website, now the cable guy is outside my door making notes. . .

When BCE extinguished Teleglobe there was lots of extra staff to cruise the neighbourhood looking for dishes.;)
