I was surprised by this move, but Bell has secured a 20 year deal to carry Leafs and Raptor games...And apparently they're pivoting to become a tech company??

As a Leafs and Raptors fan, I really hope they can help both team succeed. I've been impressed by how they've let the hockey and basketball people run things, and I hope it continues.

I hope Rogers isn't overextending themselves financially. Back in the day Harold Ballard did that when he took control of the Leafs. I think he was beholden to the TD bank. Later on Steve Stavro did the same thing with the Woodbridge group when he borrowed money from them to take control of the Leafs. Part of Stavro's problem was he was caught ripping off shareholders and charities and was forced to pay up.

Very bad for Toronto Sports. Ed Rogers is one of the most incompetent sports team owners in Toronto History. Comparable to Harold Ballard, he is directly responsible for the continuing mismanagement of the Blue Jays. The Rogers Centre recent renos have alienated long term season ticket holders in favour of elitist subscribers and more expensive everything. The product on field is crap and upper management supported by this clown has never had a successful season in 17 years.

Not gonna debate on whether Rogers is a good or bad owner, but to attempt to draw an equivalency between him and Ballard is gross (meaning large) hyperbole.

Rogers never makes any decisions on the day to day operations like the way Ballard interfered. Fires Jim Gregory, the GM (biggest mistake ever which set the team back 15 years), hires Floyd Smith, traded Lanny to spite Darryl, told Roger to wear a bag over his head, had the team wear white lettered names on white jerseys to spite the commissioner etc, etc. Ballard personally ruined that still young 70's team that even polished off the Flyers one year. Ballard wanted to be the centre of attention while Rogers sits in his office and is rarely heard from.

As far as the product on the ice just compare the '80s to what we've had the last 10 years. We've had hopes (misguided as they may have been) of a winner practically every year, but in the '80s there never a hope of anything other than embarrassment. We barely had hope of making the playoffs, when it was 16 out of 24 teams.

This will be the first time that Rogers can, for the most part, call the shots. For now it's a wait and see. IMO, to compare Rogers to Ballard is probably tainted by an intense hatred of the Rogers corporation itself (that is pure speculation on my part, admittedly), which to be honest is totally understandable. But it seems to me to be an unfair comparison.

I agree with shack, comparing Rogers to Ballard is unfair. The Blue Jay payroll under Rogers is in the top half of MLB. Just think back to the days of the Interbrew ownership of the Jays and I get shivers. When Interbrew wanted to unload the Jays there weren't many people lining up to buy them. Rogers got a good deal, but they've also run the organization in a respectable way.

Ballard was cheap, narcissistic and senile.
I step back and agree , comparing Ed Rogers to Ballard was absolutely unfair.
However, I am angry by the misdirection of the Blue Jays franchise under Shapiro and Atkins and I am afraid for the future management of MLSE sports teams under the same stewardship.
