You can argue all day what the difference is between them. Is so called grunge, rap, heavy metal R & R??. I don't know. The first song that got me hooked on music was Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets in 1955. ( I was 14 years old). It is said that R & R was evolved from country and western music. Were the Everley Bros. Johnny Cash, etc. country or pop or r & r. IMO they were all of them. Basically, if a R & R song is popular, it is also a pop song. LOL.
Your comment of the first song that got me hooked to music in general especially Rock made me want to play it loud

Too bad they had a bad falling out. Most of their hits were covers from other singers. My fav was Who'll Stop The Rain. John had a great powerful voice.
Check out the perfect cameo appearance of the still unknown Elton John at the 2:00 minute mark on TOtP "playing piano". In fact, there was no piano on the studio track, aside from a couple of overdubbed riffs and the TOtP performance was mimed. So just a rock footnote of the bizarre.
