A news reporter approaches his editor with a story about a man being bitten by a dog. The editor, unimpressed, scolds the reporter, saying, "That's not news! A dog biting a man happens every day. Now, if a man bites a dog, that’s a story worth reporting!"

So what is new about criminals using a backhoe to steal an ATM? It happens quite often.

Well i'm speechless here...How much could one get from a bank machine?
My guess is ATMs should have $20,000-30,000 in it.

Years ago, I knew a guy who had a bit too much to drink and accidentally crashed his car into a payphone pedestal. The impact knocked the payphone loose, sending it tumbling into the street. Instead of leaving it there, he picked it up, loaded it into his car, and drove off. Later, he told me that when he broke it open, he found over $200 in quarters inside.

The capacity of each cassette plays a significant role in defining the maximum amount of money an ATM can dispense between refills. A standard cassette might hold up to 2,200 banknotes, while a larger, high-capacity version could accommodate up to 4,000 banknotes. Consequently, the maximum capacity of an ATM can vary widely based on these configurations.

Typical Cash Reserves for Business-Owned ATMs
Business owners, such as those running a store, bar, or restaurant, typically load their ATMs with $2,000 to $5,000 in $20 bills.

Average Holdings in Different Locations
On average, ATMs hold between $20,000 and $100,000.

Special Cases: High Roller Areas
ATMs might be loaded with up to $200,000 in special locations like Las Vegas casinos due to the high spending patterns observed. These exceptional cases are designed to ensure that clients can withdraw substantial amounts without depleting the machine’s reserves too quickly, thus supporting the distinctive economic activities of such areas.

Speaking as someone who serviced those machines for 5 years, that is a question depending on any of several variables but I ever saw one fully loaded mainly because of insurance limitations. One of the variables would be the type of machine. Are we talking one of the tabletop machines you find in convenience stores and bank lobbies or the full size machines anchored into a wall or bank drive through? The smaller ones rarely have $4,000 in them. Convenience store models $2,000 was a lot. Full size machines rarely were half full average being just over $100,000. Had one bank we serviced their machines usually help between $300-$500,000. Is it worth trying to rob one? No. 20–30 for bank robbery along with having to kill someone while they had it open for servicing because that's the only way to get to the cash. You cannot efficiently break into one and get away with it. How much do you consider the rest of your life to be worth because that's what even attempting to rob one will cost you.

Disclaimer: My friend works for a firm that installs and operates ATM's on behalf of Banks in India. I believe these figures are true.
  • A typical ATM has 4 cassettes in it.
  • Each cassette holds 22 packets of notes.
  • Each packet has 100 notes in it.

The ones that can be hauled off with a backhoe are probably in small stores and gas stations and have smaller amounts in them. The larger capacity machines are the ones inside banks and casinos where they are loaded from the back in a room.

I saw a news story a few years ago about a guy who noticed a bank building under construction. He got a hardhat and a clipboard and started making regular visits to the building site. He walked around looking like he belonged there. He became familiar with the layout of the building and the security system. He took note of the type of lock on the room behind the bank of ATMs and ordered a lock of the same type so he could figure out how to defeat it. On the day before the new bank was to open he found out that the ATMs had been loaded. That night he got into the bank and took all the money from the ATMs, $600,000.00. He might have gotten away with it but he made one mistake. He rented a van to use in the robbery in his own name. A security guard from another business in the area was in the habit of writing down the license no. of suspicious vehicles in the area.

It looks like the one in this case was at Lawrence Plaza.

There is no way that these guys will get 20-30 for this in Canada.
The will probably get bail the next day if caught.
