I don't think he hated anyone because of the colour of their skin, or if they were gay. I think Ford simply didn't like the notion of special interest groups and when he was confronted by those with a special interest agenda he pushed back. So be it.
Uh huh
So you agree with his public claims that only 3 types of people can get HIV then? Not gay bashing at all.

1- Gays
2- Drug users sharing needles
3- Women sleeping with bi men

Ford was an ignorant piece of trash from day 1

I really liked the man ! He wasn't perfect and nor am I. I try and look at the good in people and despite the shortcomings he had I did see a lot of good in Rob Ford. I believe this place called earth would be a much better place if more people noticed the good in people and gave praise rather than picking on people's flaws and weaknesses. Yes he did many things that were downright stupid but he's human and he did things his way . I'm Italian and I'm not so sensitive that when someone calls me whop they are racist or anti Italian. Actions speak much louder than words .
I'm saddened to have lost a fellow brother who I believe spoke loudly through his actions when someone was in need .
Grateful to have had you around Rob

He was a good guy.

Definitely the least polished politician I can remember. But to me, who cares. As long as he can run a city well, I couldn't care less if he's fat and wants to smoke a joint when he gets home.

A breath of fresh air vs. all the usual stuffy politicians who act fake. What's the point of politics if someone doesn't act genuine? Ford may have acted like an ass sometimes, but at least he was strong willed in what be believed in and definitely didn't sound like he had speech writers or PR people nearby to carry the load. He just answered questions himself.

At work, do you care about how each person gets along and does great work together, in hopes the company does well. And a top boss can that can lead the company to success and giving you straight up answers.

Or are the type of person, who doesn't really care about the job, but instead focuses on what car someone drives in the parking lot and how many beers Tom drinks or how many glasses of wine Mary has when they get home. And prefers a robotic boss who never gives you a genuine answer.

Everywhere
Ditto.

I saw his wife and kids a month ago in church one Sunday (and not that I see them all the time, so I figured maybe they were praying for him).

My mom lives nearby and neighbors may bring meals and stuff to their home.

When he was a Councillor, he did me a favour by removing a penalty on late paid property taxes on a commercial property owned by my dad whose memory was failing him due to his Alzheimer's.

But he also visited the property on behalf of residents who lodged a complaint against my tenant. He did his job.

Despite his imperfections, he was a good man.
Thank you for this GB knowing you, I believe your words, but when he got involved in true politics, he was probably forever defending himself on his true beliefs.

OK, let's sum up.

"He was an awful mayor with serious personal problems but when he was a councillor he worked hard for his constituents and some people really liked him."

It really isn't such a bad epitaph.

We could always pluck some tidbits from some of your many rantings about the man:

By the way, I slam Ford because he is a lying, incompetent, lazy, racist, homophobic, belligerent idiot who has brought the Mayorality into disrepute by repeatedly associating with thugs and street criminals.
Ford is as corrupt as they come, he cavorts with the worst criminals in the city, hired career criminals to work in his office, and his cronies were caught red handed stealing from the cookie jar at TCHC.
I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

Your best course of action in this thread Fuji, would be not to say anything at all. Everyone knows you hated the man. Just STFU already. Hypocrite!

The fucking guy is dead. Let him be...

Rob Ford was the mayor of the people. I personally liked him and am sad such a great character is no longer here with us. Please have some respect for him and for the people who are truly saddened by his death.

If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. Not in this thread at least

RIP Mr. Ford

Puhlease. What a fucking ridiculous statement. Racial statements = racist. It's pretty plain and simple.
Yeah, he was such a huge racist that the people of Etobicoke and Scarborough could not wait to vote for him.

You brought up some good examples of why he was such an awful mayor (you brought that up, not me). So you must agree with the proposed epitaph.

"He was an awful mayor with serious personal problems but when he was a councillor he worked hard for his constituents and some people really liked him."

He was a terrible mayor but nobody deserves cancer and when somebody dies is is customary to reflect on whatever was positive.

In his case, before being an awful mayor he seems to have been a hard working councillor, and it is evident that some people really liked him.

The above is true. But I don't see how that is gay bashing.

I don't recall Rob Ford ever encouraging anyone to beat up gays. He didn't like to go to gay pride day. I thought he should have participated. It wouldn't have killed him (though he would have been a target himself for harassment, let's be honest.)

But Rob never advocated hurting gay people.

Um ok...
So he really was not anti Italian, Korean, Japanese, or anyone else he insulted?
(we do not know what race the taxi driver from St Pats day incident was but I am willing to bet dark skinned)

So it is cool to use the N word now so long as I preface my posts with "I am not racist"?
Well, how do you explain Rob's popularity in the black community in Toronto if he was such an awful racist?

There was an article in Toronto life about him a few years ago that looked in depth at how Rob Ford ticked and one of the things that those on the left could not fathom was how was a guy like Ford so popular with the black community? All the socialist politicians in Toronto would fall over themselves to decry racism in Toronto under every rock and get up on their soap boxes at every chance to cry about more social programs needed for people of colour and racists like Ford. Yet the black community didn't really give a rat's ass about them. And then there was Rob Ford who did bad Jamaican accents and talked about the uselessness of "hug a thug" programs and yet black people by and large loved the guy.

How do you explain that?

Ford did a good job for the people of his ward, while a councillor. The reason Ford nation grew and supported him. As Mayor, he started off and accomplished a few of his goals, and promises. Yet I expect, he found out running a city, was far different then looking after just a ward. To me he was over his head, trying to single handed run a city. He alienated the councillors, whom he needed to get the job done. As a councillor, certain items, never came to light. Yet in his last years, you could see, he felt he was entitled. Certain rules, that the rest of us have to follow, were not applicable to him. Most of those have been spoken of many times, and do not need repeating.

Councillor Ford, I can respect what he did for the people of his ward. As Mayor Ford, he failed, in too many areas, to be considered, anything but someone over his head, in a job he was not able to handle.

So for all, participants, in this, just give Ford the credit he does deserve, and the condolences to his family, that they should get. The Rob Ford story, will soon be laid to rest, as he is.

Sometimes, Mayor Ford's phraseology got messed up but reasonable and rational people knew exactly what he meant.

For example, he said that Asians work very hard. The Liberal Lefties and the socialists don't like people who work very hard, plus it might imply there are some ethnic groups don't work very hard.

One mistake he made as mayor is that he tried to run the city like a corporation and he did not play nice with lefty councillors.

P.S. Lots of non-white people speak well of Mayor Ford and you can see them in the line-up to sign the Book of Condolence.

In a very nice establishment of Wine and Spirits, I had drinks and a nice meal with some friends last night.

We listened to music, talked about our lives, trips, books, films and future plans for the summer.

I would calculate there were a couple of hundred people there from all walks of life. Blue & White collar workers, young and old, male and female. A very good representation of the constituents of the City of Toronto.

The Passing of Rob Ford was not mentioned by anyone, anywhere - staff and customers alike - during the entire evening.

Not once.

Um. First of all Don how do you know unless you were eavesdropping on numerous conversations.

Second I'm sure Brussels and Trump were also considered just as important.

Third he was a contentious topic no matter what. I learned long ago some people are so entrenched in a position of hate that even mentioning his name caused apolexy.

Finally he was the topic to many that day. Usually briefly mind because what else is there to say? Many were expecting it. Brussels happened which is far more immediate.

I noted blurps on the BBC, CNN, many other news outlets and many reported condolences to the family. Today I saw Olivia Chow discussing Rob in a positive light(including his generosity to her when Jack died).

He was a man who loved the city, and tried to make it better.

And a man who's addictions killed those dreams.

Complicated? Absolutely. But certainly not boring or just a footnote. His one term will reverberate for a long time.

This ^^^^^^

Not to mention the Flag at City Hall, Metro Hall and Toronto Civic Centres have been lowered to half-staff, and will remain that way until Ford's funeral. Books of condolences are at Toronto City Hall, at civic centre as well as an online one.

People have also been leaving condolences in chalk at Nathan Phillips Square near the 'Toronto' sign.
