RIP John Le Carre

One of the great espionage writers of our time John Le Carre has passed away at age 89.

I classify him as the heir to Joseph Conrad's spy novels. He wrote, The Spy who came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Our Kind of Traitor among others.

Ian Flemming (James Bond) was Le Carre's commanding officer during WW II. Le Carre stayed in West Berlin after WW II and during Stalin's blockage of the city not returning to Britain until the Federal Republic of Germany was founded. Ian Flemming's ideal secret agent was James Bond, Le Carre's was Alec Leamas.

He was a product of the Cold War. I wonder if his books would sell today to the same extent.

I had the timeline wrong, Le Carre was too young for WW II but he was stationed in West Berlin in the 1950's. It would become fodder for his future books.
