His timing and delivery as Howard Hunter was spot on. A guaranteed laugh every episode. No slouch with the serious scenes, either. RIP.
He also had a role in Star Trek 3: The Search For Spock. Apparently a good friend of Leonard Nimoy.

He was fantastic on Hill Street Blues...The dynamic between him and Daniel J Travanti was awesome on the show.

Why is dying at 90 a bad way to go? How could it have gone better?
Anyway. RIP Liked that show a lot. None of the actors got any, or much work after the show and they were a good cast. Show biz is cruel.
