I would like to remind people of the Jian Ghomeshi story. Jesse Brown was working on the story for a fair chunk of time, and even started working with the Toronto Star to give him resources and protection. However, the Star refused to publish it without verification or someone on the record. They were concerned about a libel suit. This concern fell apart after Ghomeshi basically slit his own throat by writing a Facebook post that mentioned the allegations against him and his alternative (read violent and non-consensual abuse) sexual habits. With that, the Star hit the publish button and Ghomeshi became a pariah.
So, I am willing to speculate these reporters couldn't publish the allegations without someone going on the record. There are different libel laws and standards depending on where the story is published. So, i think that could explain why it took so long for it to come out. Also, after the #metoo movement, it because easier for women to step forward. It could still take years for them to finally do so.
Ghomeshi did indeed fuck himself. He won the trial because the women were as vile as he was. But his sexual tastes were so repulsive - although consensual - that he was a pariah, as you say.
UK libel laws are VERY protective of the person who is being spoken about - far more so than US. So the media in the UK must REALLY have the goods on Brand to publish.
They plotted together to accuse him of non consensual sexual assault and destroy him.
I thought it was not clear if it was consensual or not, or if Ghomeshi just pushed the boundaries of consensual. That part of the issue was that the women staid in relationships with Ghomeshi throughout the incidents.
Ghomeshi always was a bit of a creep, the cases were dropped by the judge for lack of evidence and confusing texts. But I'm not sure this was a plot, I think that characterization is probably as inaccurate as saying he raped them.
But it did kill his career.
He was into heavy S&M and beat one woman so badly that she broke a rib.
Piers is actually behaving reasonably decently in this.
Brand is going to almost certainly be charged at this point. The cops cannot ignore the scandal. So we will see what the accusers look like on the stand. That's what it comes down to.
Piers has his moments. He is fun to watch when he goes at Kari Lake and if he's in a gun debate, he is very good.
It may be legal as 14 is in some countries but from a moral standpoint, he's career is over if proven. If he raped her, doesn't matter if it's from 16 to 90. he's fucked!

I suspect 16 is legal as well. So he stays out of jail and loses his career. Because 16 - while legal - ain't socially acceptable. Especially when the 16 year old is saying she was forced.
He was found civilly liable for forcible finger fucking. I invite you to say "Nah, that's not the same thing."
I'd say this....he commited a crime...it's not rape...it still boggles my mind why a criminal case wasn't pursued...
