Returning items on Amazon, then getting banned

Amazon has a very generous return policy, and excellent customer service. In the past, I have never returned items because usually I ordered the wrong thing because I didn't read the product description carefully enough, or it was too much of a hassle (even though there were a couple of defective items that were sent by third party sellers through Amazon). I figure it was my fault, so why penalize the vendor and Amazon? Another reason is the hassle of printing the label, packaging the item, and shipping it.

However, today was the first time I returned an item because it was defective. The emails I received were very short and curt, just confirming that the refund was processed (one or two sentences), not the usual friendly emails I get when I buy something.

Apparently there are many people who abuse the system in many ways. Amazon has been cracking down on them, and once you're banned you are banned from life, and cannot create another account.

My question is, do you you normally return items if you are not happy with it? Even if it is defective? What if it was your own fault that you don't like the product?

Every return costs Amazon a lot of money, since the product is usually thrown away or sold to liquidators for pennies on the dollar. You need to make several purchases to make up for that loss, and if you return too many items then there comes a point where it's no longer profitable for Amazon, and they will ban you.

I sell stuff online and the occasional scammer will open charge backs once the item has been shipped, knowing the shipment cannot be stopped. They call it a fraudulent purchase even though the shipping address is the same address that associated with the card.

Why do people return stuff on Amazon, they decide they don't like it I guess, clothes etc.

I tried selling watches online, never sell stuff that too much can go wrong with. Watches are the worst.

La la land
I bought 3 items and returned it because the family member had buyer's remorse syndrome. According to Amazon they only originally receive 3 items then they claim they only receive 2 after a month. 3 months later they charge me for one item. Now were are in a dispute. I simply said It's not my fault the receiver / shipper didn't scan it why wait so long.
The seller must pissed at me, but since this is my first ever refund/return in 10 years I been with them I can't see them banning me.

If Amazon tries to ban me I will use a different Email, since the system relies on that, the CC number can be changed by the CC company. So no biggie.

Honestly I just keep whatever I ordered from amazon whether its damaged or not

Most of the time I end up getting the same product twice because the original gets lost in transit and amazon usual orders the second one free of charge.

Lately though whenever we order something that we do not need anymore we just sell it on FB marketplace or kijiji for cheap.

I do not see the point in returning items to amazon for me personally it is too much of a hassle

I don’t buy things to try out. But I did return my purchase sometime, mostly due to the product defective or not as advertised.

I don’t think Amazon bans people unless it’s obvious someone abusing the system. I do know a friend who got a warning email.

Amazon return is quite advance these days. You used to only get the money back when the product arrives back to them but these days they refund you the money right away when you drop off at post office and scanned. That’s an improvement in service.

No, it is not about abusing the system. I read stories of people being banned for returning five items. It’s more about whether you are a profitable customer or not in the long run. Abuse is a subjective term too...

In other words, people who return too many items are labelled as "bad" customers, because they cost Amazon too much money, and Amazon "fires" them.

Like any private business, Amazon is free to refuse service to anyone as long as it's not discriminating based on race/gender/sexual orientation, etc.

If this is how Amazon is going to roll these days, they should add a Disclaimer to the Returns Policy in BIG BOLD PRINT AND CAPS LIKE THIS. "FIVE OR MORE RETURNS WITHIN A 12 MONTH SPAN = LIFETIME BAN."

I'd be banned already lmao

But given how much I order from there, when I do a 8-15 item return every 2 or 3 months they don't care.

a bit curious as to why that is ... what are the most common problems you’ve encountered with selling watches online?

I drop shipped them which isn't a great idea either. One I had the second hand get stuck, broken band, email a few months later the battery was dead, broken glass etc. I didn't sell on Amazon. I wouldn't sell anything electronic, comes with a warranty or battery if possible.

Ok tnx good to know...
over the years I have bought plenty of watches online and as picky as I am I never had any problems or returned anything... but I was curious as to what was the most common reasons for people returning items ... anyways I’m thinking of getting rid of some pieces but kind of dread the whole selling process online

Etsy is awful for that, they always side with buyer first. I got ripped off by someone this year that way, it was literally days after purchase and they disputed it as item not arriving. I asked them to allow 6 weeks, as it was international and at the start of covid when shipping was delayed, and Etsy refused and made me refund, and buyer got to keep item when it did arrive (most likely exactly on time).Ugh.

I've only made one return because the item was so beat up and defective that it was nearly an insult to have been sold it. Other than that, I always try to check reviews and such to be sure I will be happy with item. I've had pretty decent luck. I have cancelled orders when informed shipping would be delayed, never had a problem with that. I order faaaar too often these days, but I do try to make an effort to order from small local places when it is an option.
