There are sites that track these things. We plan to pay close attention to them. Basically avoid Jamaica and Haiti unless in a flotilla.
The Caribbean coast off Venezuela hosted the majority of these attacks, with Saint Vincent, Colombia, St. Lucia and The Grenadines also being hot spots of piracy in the region.

Are there any Caribbean countries that people recommend staying during the winter months?

I have dual Canadian-Jamaican citizenship, but I would rather not live in Jamaica.

Because of treaties, Jamaicans can reside in most Caribbean countries permanently (I would be staying only for a few months).

Which country do people recommend?

Someone earlier mentioned Aruba, but I doubt that the treaty applies to that country.
The Carribean Islands are pretty much all third world countries. If that’s where you want to be then have at er.

The Caribbean is over rated. Mostly it’s the proximity to North America that makes it popular.

A further trip but Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece are much more comfortable. And a little gem called Montenegro. And as other posters have stated just go for a visit. A month here a month there etc. Several great spots within each of these countries to keep you interested for years to come. Keep Canada as your home. The grass IS greener on this side of the fence.

Over the years, I met so many older folks born in Portugal, Italy and Greece living in Canada and they all talk about going back to the home country. Yet, they are all still here.
Yep that’s why I said they’re nice places to visit and Canada should be your home.

When thinking about retiring abroad, it's good to look at things like banking stability, healthcare, and the local culture. Personally, I find places like Costa Rica appealing because of the beautiful scenery and lower cost of living, which many retirees love. If you're thinking about moving, take a look at grupoecoquintas.com. They have properties in La Fortuna de San Carlos, which is a gorgeous and peaceful spot.

My big is issue is where I can justifiably buy a winter home in the US. I have some good luck snowbirding in Arizona and it is purple enough that folks I've met don't talk politics so they don't alienate each other. They do have open carry which is something.

But where every you choose to go, please do not be a Canadian citizen by convenience, ie. the 20K "Canadians" in Lebanon who expect Canadian government jets to drop everything and pick them up if a war breaks out with Israel.

I can’t wait until retirement when I never have to see another Canadian winter ever again.

Agreed. Was just in TCI for 10 days. The beaches are great but that's about it. The locals are not that friendly. Everything is expensive because the islands are isolated and have to import everything. I'd take Dominican or Mexico or Cuba over Turks any day but again, they're all third world countries. I never thought I'd be so happy to be back in Canada...

Just move to the West Coast.
Fuck that. I want warm beach sand.
I don’t care if it’s in mosquito filled Belize or Colombia, I gotta get away from winter.

I’ve shoveled a lifetime of snow. I’m just about at my breaking point.

The best deal for Turks is Club Med. Not as upscale as the others but they got there first, so best part of the beach. But yeah, not sure what is happening with the kitchen staff in particular.
Are they totally underpaid? Are they mostly from places like Dominican Republic or Haiti or domestic? Sometimes they totally ignore you.

Loved the Algarve area, especially the golf courses.
