The question is what would you do?

So my answer is turn off my phone and enjoy my lunch.

I'd probably bring a newspaper as well though..God forbid.
Being an old twice divorced guy who lives alone, does not date, and the only things I can cook are late breakfast and frozen TV dinners, I usually eat dinner alone, at reasonably priced restaurants.

Whether at "The Golden Arches", Burger King, Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet, The Cheesecake Factory, or The Lone Star Texas Grill, etc. etc.

To entertain myself I always bring a magazine to read. It's my best time for reading my New Yorker magazines, to which I subscribe, and from which I learn interesting information at the same time, not to mention enjoying the very witty cartoons.

No embarrassment at all! :geek:

Your first mistake was ordering a pop.

I went out to lunch yesterday at a busy restaurant…it was a mid-priced pub style restaurant.

I am on my own and the hostess seats me at my table. The waitress brings me a pop, I put in my order, and then I start scrolling through Tik Tok on my phone…as one does. The restaurant is kinda loud and busy with music playing from speakers in the ceiling so it was kinda hard to hear some of the vids but…whatev.

Anyway, sitting diagonally across the aisle from me is a table of 6 elderly women. One of these women calls to me across the aisle and asks me to turn down my phone. I looked at her for a moment and then turned the phone off. The lady then told me again that the phone had been very disturbing to her. I was like…WTF…there are noises coming at us from everywhere and yet you are disturbed by my phone??? And she was completely indignant and condescending in her attitude and tone of voice.

I sat and pondered my choices? I considered standing up for myself but quickly concluded that getting into a public standoff with a table full of elderly Karen’s would not produce a favourable result. So instead I just cancelled my order and left…I didn’t feel like eating my lunch surrounded by that shitty, angry energy…so I explained the situation to the waitress who was cool about it and retreated to the combination Wendy’s/Tim Horton’s drive thru for my lunch.

I feel that I mare the mature choice.

What would you do?
You did the right thing. I would have done exactly the same. Just apologize a dozen times, and that's that.

Don't stand up for yourself when you don't know what you're up against, you might run into bunch of crazies, like that Asian dude that got stabbed to death by those "teenage girls". In public, most important thing is self-preservation.

There's nothing more annoying than the sound of tiny speakerphones around you. In public, you should wear earphones or not listen to videos at all, and especially not have conversation on speaker or by Facetime.

This is my biggest pet peeve these days. People scrolling on Tik tok are the worst. You don't want to watch most of the videos, yet I have to hear most of the videos that you don't want to watch and that I don't want to hear, and through the annoying quality of your phone speakers.

It's noise. Just noise. Stop the noise in public.

In public, put your earphones on to scroll your videos or to have a conversation on Facetime.

It sounds like noise really upsets you. Maybe invest in some noise cancelling headphones of your own to wear in public…it might make things a bit more manageable for you?

You say that like I am the problem. No, the sound of your cellphone doesn't only annoy me, but many people at the same time around you. I am just the one vocal about it. People who want to watch their Tik Tok so bad or have a conversation on Facetime should be the one with the headphones.

I find people doing what you did extremely annoying. In most Asian cities, this is considered very rude.
People are going out to enjoy a meal with friends or loved ones shouldn't have to put up with this annoyance.
You seem to be a person who only cares about themselves and is oblivious to the people around you. Unfortunately so many in our society are like you.

But tbh you kinda are the problem if hearing someone else’s tik tok is causing you this much distress. I can understand how it may be mildly annoying to others and perhaps I need to break down and buy some ear buds…but you claim that there is literally “nothing more annoying” than this sound and that people who do it are “the worst” which seems like an awfully strong reaction.

Thus, I get the impression that you may have a sensitivity to certain sounds…perhaps you are on the autism spectrum? Regardless, it sounds like it happens rather often in your life to the point that it has become your “biggest pet peeve.”

From what you describe, it seems like there are thousands of people out there in the world listening to their tik toks without ear buds- I’ve never noticed them because it doesn’t bother me but you clearly have. Sadly, unlike me, I doubt any of these people care about your feelings and they are going to keep doing what they do.

So at some point it becomes a choice: you can go around crashing out every time the world doesn’t align with how you think it should be or you can invest in a good pair of noise cancelling headphones…and if you keep choosing to crash out over it then I think at some point it’s fair to question whether you are the problem.

I presume you don't take public transportation, and don't spend a lot of time by yourself surrounded by people who has nothing better to do than looking at their phone.

And no, I won't wear noise-cancelling earbuds when I am with someone at a restaurant having a good time, when the table behind us decide to watch their useless Tik Tok, sound on, for half an hour.

I think you may be straying awfully close to becoming a Karen…and I’m guessing this is probably not the first time this has been pointed out to you.

I would have stayed and waited until the ladies were done and tell the waitress who served them to give me the bills for the other 5 ladies and I would have paid them leaving a nice tip for the waitress. I would have waited until the Karen realized that she was the only one who didn't get a free lunch!!

I was thinking more of trying to stiff the bitch for my bill.
