I fear I am going to be villified here but I have to say it ...

At least 10 times in the past 6-8 months ( quite sadly ) I have been driving eastbound on the 401 and have viewed ambulances , firetrucks , other vehicles and many pedestrians waving flags honouring those being brought home in an escort ( police , limousines , hearse etc ... ) who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.

I fully support our troops and I understand the escort and convoy of vehicles.

Here is my issue.

All of the overpasses are completely clogged due to the vehicles parked there for a minimum of half an hour before the convoy goes by. The rubberneckers on the highway itself wondering what the ambulances and firetrucks are doing on the overpasses.

At least twice this happened during traffic hour!!!!

We should all respect those Canadian soldiers who have fallen in battle.

Do these Emergency Service people not realize the delay they are causing?

Lastly ... with all of these vehicles and personnel paying their respect ... who the heck is on call for emergencies?

Again ... no issues with our troops and no issue with paying tribute. I just think this particular demonstration of respect is ill planned and thought out and frankly it feels overwrought.

No disrespect but I just think each soldier's death was ill planned & thought out, well, more unexpected & unthinkable really. We should also feel lucky to still be able to feel something is overwrought because these men & women no longer feel Anything anymore.

I for one have been really late for appointments due to this on 2 occasions but I don't feel inconvenienced. I simply explained why I was late & it was understood & that was the end of it. If someone made a big stink bout it to me I would be tempted to let someone else have their business.

A minor occasional delay is the Least we can offer the dead & just as importantly, it boosts the morale of those who live to fight on & let them know that if they die there will be the small comfort of respect & remembrance.

Perhaps I did a shitty job of explaining myself.

I am not in any way shape or form passing judgement on the convoy and escorts.

My Dad was a veteran and I support those men and women entirely.

I could go on and on about my respect and admiration for them and even more so for those who have died.

I don't have an issue with the delay that the convoy may cause.

I have no problem with that.

It is the people on the overpass I take exception to.

They take up an entire lane on the overpass for a lengthy period and the usage of Emergency Service vehicles does not compute.

Please do not interrupt my response as disrespectful of our armed forces.
These guys risk their lives for us and I would gladly give up many hours to honor their memory.

What I see as the issue is not the delay, but whenever there is a distraction that disrupts the flow of traffic, rubber neckers do not drive as expected, rather they hammer on the brakes to see what is all the excitement about.
Today on the DVP this happened as we drove towards an overpass.
The driver of the vehicle I was in, had to slam on the brakes as the person in front on him slowed down to look @ the flags/ ambulances / etc on the overpass.
The driver behind us also slammed on the brakes & came close to hitting us.

There are a huge number of drivers in this city who are not good drivers.
Distracting them is not a good idea.

It is important to honor those who have made the highest sacrifice for our freedom and the quality of life we enjoy.
But lets not cause an accident & risk a life in the process.

I think he's trying to say...why do they need to park their vehicles on the overpass, can't they park them in a lot nearby and walk onto the bridge. Maybe they're trying to protect the safety of the crowd on the overpass.

I thought that the radio stations etc announced when the convoys would be coming along? Why don't you figure out when the convoy is going through and leave earlier, or take a different route?

I guess people will complain about anything. Try thinking about what the convoy represents to many, many people while you are waiting...you'll probably not mind waiting all that much. I really can't think of a way of properly expressing what a stupid comment you have made.

I am NOT saying we should not express our sympathy and support on this.

Why can't we have a gathering at another place.

This is my point people.

It is NOT about the soldiers over there , their commitment , the loss , the sacrifice ... anything!

It is about the place and time where the expression of support is happening.

It is unfortunate that the tributes to fallen soldier so inconvenient to your daily routine. I guess the soldiers should really apologize to you for your inconvenience... Oh sorry I forgot their dead. :rolleyes:

I am guessing it is fairly inconvenience for the family and the soldiers that they are dead.

An hour in traffic s not so bad considering they lost their lives.

Besides you can use that time to eat some fruit or check your emails. If I am in bumper to bumper traffic that is what I do.
