They think the outcome is up to God, eh? What are they going to think on Wednesday morning if they find out God wasn't paying attention to their prayers?

They may think Allah was answering Obama's prayers.

So a false God has more pull then their's? That's gotta hurt.

They'll probably figure out that it was God's will. Part of his master plan.

God always hears and answers our prayers. However, what we think we are asking for and what we truly need are not infrequently different things sometimes it takes us many years to see this, and the in-between is not infrequently a time of saying God didn't listen/God doesn't care or even there isn't a God.

God doesn't work as we think in Third Grade - I haven't done any studying but please God change the answers on the test paper. That isn't so much religion as it is a belief in witchcraft.

I think it fair to say we have a different impression of what God may or may not be.

That is probably the understatement of the year.

However, if you didn't make sure you read the second paragraph.

To paraphrase, God knows what is best, though you may not get what you ask for?

If this is true (and I have no reason or desire to argue) Obama will win. Hopefully those in the McCain crowd will come to terms with this like I'm sure you will......eventually. :D

God also gives us free will.

There are several good Seminaries/Theological Colleges in Toronto that are far better places to explore all this than TERB.

This whole discussion is missing an important point ...

This gives the IRS a good opportunity to put some of these "psudo churches" that are actually political front organizations on the tax rolls where they belong!:D

Terb is probably the most appropriate place to discuss religion. A lot more sense in here than in seminaries or theological college. And I doubt anyone on this board is into little boys.

This perhaps reinforces some of the points I've previous stated.

To which problems with "little boys" and clerics in the United Church of Canada or the Orthodox, or Anglican Churches in Canada do you refer us?

In the U.S. there are even more major denominations, which ones there. Or perchance are you referring to but one denominations problems? Somewhat like 'all the folks on TERB are alike.'

Assuming Obama's going to win, I'd be curious to see how the faithful who prayed for a McCain win are going to explain their loss.

Because it's a classic example of bad prayer - shouldn't one instead be praying that whomever is elected will be able to see matters clearly and be guided to make right judgements? Isn't that really what one is praying for?

The only problem is that many, perhaps even most of the churches that have broken the IRS regulation have in fact been churches sermonizing in support of Democratic candidates. I doubt that's what you had in mind.

Your interpretation of prayer is clearly more enlightened than that of many parishioners. I can only hope that those praying for a specific outcome take a similar view to yours.

For the record, I did the whole "devoted christian" thing for a few years when circumstances in my life went to hell in a handbasket. In my personal case, religion proved to be a purely destructive force. Why and how I escaped the clutches of institutionalized religion is a whole story unto itself and I won't bore anyone with it here. Suffice it to say that it was only when I turned my back on religion and took action based on my desired outcome - rather than looking to some supernatural force to make things better - did my life actually improve.

In most cases it is hard to make a distinction between religion and witchcraft.
