RELIABLE free web hosting

Hi all, here's the scoop:

Over a year ago, I set up a small portfolio site on a free host. It STILL works fine. Bandwidth is miniscule, demand small... no problems.

I don't want to use a credit card (you'll see why in a sec). I don't have a PayPal account. Just moved to a TO, so no real close new friends to help, and still looking for work -- read: I'm pretty much FLAT broke ALL the time! :-(

I have, however, misplaced the password to my site login, and, try as I might, CANNOT get these idiot web site hosts to respond to anything -- email, support forum posts, support forum PM's... nothing I've tried for 3 months now has even elicited a PEEP out of them. And thus, with this service, I don't want to give my credit card info to ANYONE associated with web hosting... even if it's just a "convenience" thing.

I need to find a new host, and transfer the domain over so that I can update the files. Obviously with the move, resume has changed, contact info, etc. (Thus: I'm not posting the site here! :p)

Can ANYONE recommend a good FREE hosting company that has a decent amount of service, decent up-time, and a semi-proven track record? I don't want to name the one I'm with, as I'm sure their spies are out there (I've seen then in other forums trolling the site and others of theirs), but I've GOT to get control of my domain and contents back again!

Thanks for any recos, people! I'm now desparate.

Cheers.

P.S. I'm posting on other web-related forums as well... just thought there might be someone on here too!

So, you want everything but want to pay nothing? Well, good luck with that.
Actually, all ready have everything, just including the crappy service.

Now if I could just turn that around, then... yeah, you're absolutely right. :)

Hey there. You can actually get a domain without a credit card (crappy yoursite.co.cc or yoursite.co.cu sites and the like), but I didn't register with the crappy host; I used a regular registrar, a proper domain name, and my card. That's one I thing I wanted in perpetuity.

And yeah, maybe I am dreaming... both service and quality. Thought I'd put it out there... maybe blue_bawls's Google reco will pan out. Had a couple of other suggestions from another board, too. If not, I'll have to shell out, but I've got so little traffic / bandwidth, I'd like to scout a more prudent option first. If I find something, I'll let you know.

Thanks, all.

Hi guys, thanks for all the suggestions. I took a look at google and weebly... unfortunately, they're both "template" sites (can't upload your own site, have to use one of theirs). They're both great suggestions; just not for me.

Think I'm going to have to go the pay route... <sigh>. Doesn't seem worth it when you're only looking for work every 2 years or so! :p

Thanks again!

dude, just get a pre-paid Visa gift card to use as a creditcard?

The card isn't the problem, man -- I've got one. It's the fact that, for about a month every two years, I use the site. Otherwise, it just sits fallow, un-hit, because it's only a portfolio site. For that, I don't want to give some two-bit, close-up-shop company my card number again. I just don't trust 'em. But if I gotta, I gotta.

hiya BackToTheHobby, ah I see...I do not like givin cards out either.

ifya make money off portfolio, maybe your registrar offers cheap hosting plan? a bigger place like GoDaddy you could get rolled into one package for $5 a month or whatever I imagine.

emaxhosting.com.

I used them before my sites took off. Decent host.

Also look at 1and1.com.

I wouldn't be willing to be *paid* to let a client know a site I had hosted for *free*. How much of a jackass do I want to be in front of people whose respect I'm courting?

Then again, I could just be stupid. Some days it's hard to tell.

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions. It's been a real eye-opener looking at all the options.

As it turns out, my hosting company has, as near as anyone can figure, shut down. Their site is still up, but the support forums have been closed, and a message saying, in effect, "Don't expect to hear back from them" has taken the forums' place. (Read: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.) Any existing customers? You're SOL. New customers? At your own risk, but we haven't heard from these turds in over 2 months (and this from the forum moderators!).

In another move, my domain registrar (50web.com) has actually blocked any traffic flow to my web host, citing either illegal activity (!), a phishing scam (!!) or some other form of abuse or naughtiness (!!!) (I'm all for naughtiness, but NWMWS (not with MY web site! There are children in the room!). Rather extreme, but it answers the question as to why my site has been down for three days now (wish they'd told me, though!)

I've decided to go with jumpline.com, as they're a paid host, but have a 12-month free offer on right now. Good bandwidth, good reviews, good recos from others in the industry. And yes, Zorlack, I used a pre-paid card, fresh outta the box. Doesn't even have a dime on it. They just want the number. ;-)

Again, thanks for the help, and if I can repay anyone, shoot me a PM.

Cheers!
