Red Light Camera Tickets

What I had heard from an insurance agent was that if you had several photo radar and/or red light camera tickets over a period of time it can affect your insurance as even if you claim you weren't driving you are showing bad judgement in who you loan your car to.
If you have a number of these tickets you should have your insurance affected, or more.

+1 Seems the fine was increased.

I read last year that these cameras were losing money as they were not generating as many tickes as expected. I guess by raising the fine big time, they took care of that.

FFS! Why do we keep having these same discussions over and over again, with people continuing to spread bullshit.

Points and insurance are two completely different things. One has nothing to do with the other. Points are used by the MTO to assess your driving risk -- get too many and they will suspend or revoke your licence.

Insurance doesn't care how many points you have, they care about convictions. People think if they plead their speeding tickets down to 15 over they are in the clear, since there aren't any points. Wrong. You still got a conviction for a moving violation, and insurance will ding you. Not likely for the first one, but get two or three and you'll get hit.

Now, for red light cameras, people are correct that things are different since the driver can't be identified. The ticket goes to the owner of the car. Since points apply to the individual driving, no points are assessed. But you can be damn sure the insurance company is informed. Whether they take any action is up to them, and will depend on your driving history, but don't think just because there no points there is no insurance hit. The insurance is on the car, and whether it was you driving or not, they don't care.

No argument here, fortunately in the last twenty years I've only had a couple parking tickets (meter ran out on me darn it) that I paid and one I had cancelled.

And when you pay the ticket, you are admitting guilt and accepting the conviction. But in spite of our high premiums, apparently the insurance companies do not have the funds to pay for keeping up with that info.

Gentlemen...fight any red light camera ticket. I have done so 3 times and have ALWAYS had the fine reduced to 50 bucks. this advice was given to me by a court officer the first time i got one. These tickets are NEVER given to the driver yet only to the liscence plate...there is a huge difference. The plate gets the ticket therefore the owner of the car REGARDLESS of who was driving gets the ticket and can NEVER be charged to a driver. My brother's wife got one...he went to court for her...it was also reduced to 50 bucks and end of story. Points never taken...insurance never involved because a person does not get charged....the plate does.

Insurance is not just connected to a driver, but to a vehicle. If there's a conviction on the vehicle, it will be reported to insurance.

Thompo69,

I have had 3..both court officer AND insurance have told me otherwise. I am a high risk driver based on at fault accidents...when I was searching for insurance, my driver's abstract was needed to show to the various companies and not 1 red light violation was on it...and they happened over a 2 year span thus would have had plenty of time to be included. These tickets are in no way treated like other traffic violations for the simple fact that a human police officer did not give a person a ticket...rather a car. Almost as a parking violation...

It's not the e points the insurance will care about - its the tickets (convictions) you got.
So if license is suspended because of two speeding tickets it won't affect auto insurance beyond the ticket convictions, insurance companies don't care about driver suspensions?

It's a scam and a cash cow for the city. It cost the city approximatley $150,000 to install one and operate it. And in the long run, the city hopes to make a decent profit out of it. And the city does. There is no way to fight this in court.

As in all matters of law; court is the last place you want to be fighting anything. Avoid it at all costs.

Fight your tendency to enter intersections you cannot clear before the light goes red, brake as soon as you see the amber, and save the aggro and money by not fighting at all.

Tell that to the victims of someone who just had to get through that yellow light. If they make one person to pause and not go through the yellow and not hit someone, then $150,000 is cheap. They don't just put them up on any old intersection, pulling the names out of a hat, but at the ones that have shown to be dangerous and expensive for drivers and pedestrians.

Of course they are not on your drivers abstract -- as has been correctly pointed out, they are not linked to a driver. That doesn't mean insurance isn't made aware of them, and that they can't link them to the owner of the vehicle. Whether they do anything, is up to them. But don't think for a second they aren't aware of it.

Somewhere but not here.

The speeding conviction is what they care about - and other traffic violations/convictions.

The fines, points, suspension, impounding your car are your punishments for not following the law.

Its a voluntary tax - if you follow the rules you won't be paying. If you want to teach them a lesson follows the rules then the city gets nothing from you.
