Red Light Camera Tickets

Greetings, looking for info and advice on whether it's worth fighting such red light camera tickets versus just paying the fine? I have heard that since the ticket is issued to the vehicle instead of the driver that the penalty is only a fine and no demerit points or insurance impact?

You heard right. Since there is no evidence as to who the driver was, there are no license points involved.

There is no demerit points for this Red Light Ticket, since there is no proof as to who the driver is in Ontario. Honestly it is more or less like an expensive parking ticket. It happened, but there is no way to prove who the driver was...

Can't see how you'd argue against being guilty, you might get a reduction if you pled poverty and faked being sorry.

Being guilty of running a light will not have a negative impact on your insurance rates???? You sure? Are you an agent? Find it hard to believe that a speeding ticket of 10km over the limit will effect your rating but not running a red light??? Wow, this insurance industry is more f*#ked than I thought.

If a cop sees you run a red light and pulls you over and gives you a ticket, that will affect your insurance.

Are you deliberately being obtuse? The red light camera takes a picture of the license plate of the vehicle. The camera does not take a picture of the driver of the vehicle. It is not a case of the insurance company "respecting" the camera it is a case of no one, the insurance company, the police and the prosecutor included, having any evidence of who was driving the car when a ticket is generated by a red light camera. When a police officer stops a car for running a red light the officer has the opportunity to see who is driving the car and compel the person to prodcue evidence of identification.

I am pretty sure the same principles applied to radar cameras when the OPP were using them on Ontario highways - a fine but no points because the driver could not be positively identifed.

Don't fight it but go to the Justice of the Peace and they will reduce the ticket amount for you.

It's an expensive lesson.

What I had heard from an insurance agent was that if you had several photo radar and/or red light camera tickets over a period of time it can affect your insurance as even if you claim you weren't driving you are showing bad judgement in who you loan your car to.

I paid the ticket by mail and that was the last I heard about it. My insurance has renewed since and there was no mention of this ticket on the renewal assessment and thus no impact on insurance. Basically I took it as a close call and a lesson learned to be more vigilant and am fortunate that nothing happened.

I wouldn't go fight it. that may end up badly. What if the judge asks if you were in the car? You say yes. Then he/she asks were you driving? and so it all goes down the drain. If there is a court record of YOU admitting running the red, you may have compromised your ability to answer NO on insurance forms in the future to the question "have you ever...whatever?". risky.

I've had one....$325 later it was an expensive lesson that did not affect my insurance. Pay it and move on.

Don't take the chance at the red light camera intersections. Those cameras take good clear multiple shots of your vehicle and plate #.
