Basically, you can record your own conversations between yourself and only one person, even secretly, however, if you do so with a surreptitious recorder (like one that looks like a pen), you are guilty of an indictable offence with a maximum sentence of two years (for possession of such a device). So use an ipod and you're okay.

Service organizations or institutions who say that the phone call may be recorded for quality control purposes perhaps do so as a courtesy?
It is because the company is a third party recording a call between you and their phone agent.

It is also with pointing out that the law is different in the US where in many states your need all parties to be aware of the recording.

God knows what law will apply if a Canadian telephones someone in a jurisdiction that requires notification to all parties and then secretly records the phone call.

Ah, yes of course! I also read that it may be required under consumer protection legislation or some other kind of commercial regulation.
