recent YYZ experience

I recently visited Toronto (live in the US) and much to my surprise got called in to speak to a customs agent. First time this has happened,I have visited Canada multiple times a year over the last few years and never talked to somebody at YYZ before. Anyway this wasn't my first trip to Canada this year and I was planning to stay over a month (which i've done previously) and got questioned on the purposes of my trips and where i was staying, who i was seeing etc, where i work ... not very fun.

Just curious if maybe there was heightened checking this year due to Fifa... or if this is going to be common occurrence going forward and if anybody else had experienced similar particularly this year.

I took a trip by car into the US last year and was asked the very same thing, I was born in the US but was using a Cdn passport.

Custom agents can randomly do spot checks by pulling anyone from the line for a more detailed interview. That you're a frequent US visitor likely pushed you to the top of that list this time. If this was during Fifa that's a possibility, otherwise it was just your turn to get randomly selected.

Don't put much in to it. You lost out on the custom officer random check lottery. The very next guy was either carrying explosives or drugs.

God who cares, dude. They do random checks all the time. Get on with your life, and be happy you moved along without incident.

You are only allowed to be in Canada or US for 3 months per year I think or cycle year. Actually any where in the world. But if you came here like 2 months already in total, yes that is a red flag.

If you have family here/there then that should be okay. My cousins use the excuse of work since they can do that, Walmart / Amazon. Office job for those nosy clowns.
Also how soon did you buy your flight ticket, also matters.
