It's not that strange since it's been rumoured for weeks now. Recchi has played for Pittsburgh in the past and has a friendship with Mario, so that might have a lot to do with it. And then there is the Ken Hitchcock fator. He is not exactly a players coach.

Kathleen , I can't comment because I havn't seen the terms of the contracts, but i don't think its for alot of money. It seems teams are only spending about 2 to 3 million per year per player on contracts right now until they know what the future holds with a new CBA.

Kathleen, In sports now a days 2-3 million is not alot of money, Hell Carlos Boozer just signed with the Utah Jazz for 70 Million, yeah you heard me right 70 Million dollars , and you ask Carlos who???????? thats right Carlos Boozer who was a very good college player with Duke but a marginal player in the NBA who had a good season last year, but then who wouldn't playing with Labron James.

Pittsburgh has more money then they let on. They always said that their salary dumping was in preperation of the CBA. Maybe thats true....I mean...Craig Patrick is brillent so I wouldn't be surprised if he is a head of all the other GMS. Before signing Recchi, their payroll for next year was at 10 million but they still don't have all their players signed. According to rumours they are still after Kovalev and even Zhamnov. I would love for them to get Kovie back in black and gold.

Another thing to note is that the city has been given permission to have Slot machines. That will raise more revenue for them and hopefully get them a new stadium. Hard to believe they play in the oldest stadium in the league.

Thats the only reason I found it odd, because they apparently have very little money so where did this come from? And furthermore, what does Recchi see in the Penguins???

Recchi's wife is from Pittsburgh and he has lived there ever since moving. Apparently they are in the process of building their dream house there. He is looking forward to leading a young team so he can teach them. He's also close friends with Mario and Craig Patrick.

yep thats the reason i heard for the signing. Let's see if this turns out a good thing for the Pens and for Recchi who brings a lot of experience and leadership with him!

New rumour......Kovalev to Pittsburgh is all but a done deal. Should be annouced next week. I'll believe it when I see it but they were right about Recchi.

Did Mario win the 290 million powerball lottery last week?

With their young new goalie, it could make for an exciting new yr for the team. Cool.

Well they did end the season on a tear.......their long suffering fans deserve this. Still a lot of work to do though.

Well it would be nice to see them get back into the playoffs or at least have a better record next season!

Ric Jackman as the Pens #2 defenceman = likely not in the playoffs.

Ric Jackman is awesome in Pittsburgh. Didn't get to see him play really so I can't speak for his D, but he had what.....10 goals for the Pens?

Jackman seemed to improve once he left Toronto. I think he was glad he can be with a team that could give him some playing time. Hes a player you can develop and have confidence knowing hes a #2 defenceman. Not sure of him being number 1 on D but he has got good defensive skills.

Who would of thought he would go to Pittsburgh and get 24 points in 25 games?

Well, he's clearly their number one defenseman heading into the season now.
His offensive skills were always waiting to develop, but his defense may still be a sore spot.
We'll see.
I'd be surprised (not shocked, though) by anything like a repeat of those numbers - 45 points is his over-under, with a -20.

He's number 2 behind Dick Tarnstrom

Well one day Jackman will be number 1. I think Pittburgh may be back in the playoffs soon. They certainly are making some steps in the right direction!

With Orpik, Whitney, Welch and Nemac in their organization, Jackman may not be number one any time soon if those prospects pan out. Orpik had a great first season hopefully he can keep it up and become a feared hitter in the league.
