Hi Folks.

I have a birthday meeting coming up. My Dad's coming from London and we're meeting in the middle in the Kitchener area.

I recall I used to get off at hwy 8 and head south I think..to a well known local tourist restaurant that has been there for many years right on the river. Sort of log cabinish. Catered to the 401 crowd with a gift shop etc.

When my kids were younger we used to stop there as a break for something to eat etc.

My Dad just turned 80, I just turned 53 and my son is about to turn 20 so it's meant as a nice late afternoon meal together.

If you don't know the restaurant I mean can you suggest someplace nice right near the 401 to meet?

I don't want my dad driving in the dark..neither does he..lol...

Thanks

relying on the local terbie knowledge.!

Moose Winoskie is just off 401 and they can put moose antlers on your dad & sing him happy b-day, lol. Also, there are a bunch more restaurants right in that general area now. I believe it is the King St exit off 401, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Central Ont. between here & there
you are speaking of Pioneer BBQ
across the road from McDonalds
beside Costco
from Toronto take HWY 8 exit to kitchener, take exit for Sportsworld Dr come off the ramp & Pioneer BBQ is on the left about 1/2 km or so
From London take Hwy 8/King st to Kitchener come down until you pass Costco, at the lights turn right by Mc D's, Pioneer BBQ on right 1st drive way is shared for Tim Horton's & the BBQ

Niagara peninsula
Preston

I remember the place too. It was in Preston, south of 401 on Hwy 8. Trouble with gray hair - I can't remember the name either!

I think he was probably referring to the Knotty Pine since he said he'd go south off the 401. Unfortunately, Calloway says it is closed but now re-opened as simply The Pines. It looks like they are primarily a catering and banquet hall site.

I'd recommend the Charcoal Steak House. My family and I have been going there on an off since before it was above the Highway Market. It can look somewhat pricey but I think it is worth it and actually a good value compared to Toronto.

At first I thought he was discribing the Pioneer BBQ. The Charcoal is pretty classy for family trips. Great for now delisious food Great Sunday Brunch yummy but if you want simple go to the Pioneer.

if it is the Pines he was refering to then he is out of luck. It is used strictly as a banquet hall now. Alternative places in the area have been mentioned... in my opinion Charcoal Steakhouse is the best of the bunch.
Moose Winooski's, Outback Steakhouse, Eastside Mario's and the old Pioneer are there too. Also the new Mandarin opened recently and might be a good option for you.
But the Pines or Knotty Pines as it was known is no longer an option.

It was the Knotty Pine. Right beside the river. Had a gift shop and catered to the tourists off the 401. It's been many years since I've been there.

So the two choices seem to be:

The Charcoal Steak House and the Pioneer BBQ .

By the sounds of it I'll opt for the Charcoal Steak House. It is a birthday celebration and I'd like it to be nice yet not over the top if you know what I mean. I think my Dad at 80 yrs will find more to his liking on the menu than the other place.

Thanks for the help guys!

Truly appreciate it.

the brunch at charcoal is FANTASTIC, far better value for the $
Golfs steak house would be a 2nd choice

Golfs would be a good choice, but it seems like Mark doesn't want to go too far off the highway. Golfs Steak House would be another 7-8 minutes off the 401.

The steaks are great at the Charcoal Steak House, but so are the pork dishes like pigstails and ribs.

Thanks guys...My Dad just turning 80 does not like to drive to long in the dark...so we're meeting at 3 Pm..dinner served about 4 Pm..and he'll be back in London in the twilight which he doesn't mind. In fact after passing his 80 year old driving test I think he wants to drive more now! I'll hide the keys!

The Charcoal seems to be the best place. I made reservations and they are taking care of everything. Not to far off the 401 for any of us and they are going out of their way to provide us with any restaurant menu they have for selection. Anything goes..and they will be bringing my dad a special celebration at the end of the meal.

I truly thank you guys for helping me with this.

It's a triple Birthday celebration but my dad's 80th is the main one.

Only hope I can repay the favor to others in the same situation.
