Heard from Ron McLean at 6:43pmEST on Saturday April 27, 2013 on CBC national television.

"Dion Phaneuf is one of the best in the game. He is one of the best leaders in Leaf history. Without Dion the Leafs defence wouldn't have mustered much defence."

Tell me Ron McLean has Alzheimer's or got hit in the head today and was having a concussion moment.

I'm a very loyal and knowledgable leaf fan and Ron McLeans comments insulted captains like Wendle Clark, Darryl Sittler, Dave Keon, Mats Sudin, Doug Gilmour, George Armstong, Sid Smith, Ted Kenndy, Syl Apps Sr, Red Honer, Charlie Conacher and Hap Day.

If the leafs were smart they would ask Phaneuf to do what they ask my good friend Rick Vaive to do.....take the "C" off his shirt and give it to Joffrey Lupul, a person who shows passion for the game, a player who ignites his team when he is on the ice.

( I didn't mention Rob Ramage because I don't think he had a impact on the leafs)

how do we really know or truly judge, we dont know what he is actually like in the dressing room ( maybe you do or have insider info) just sayin, its a very difficult to judge,

I had this same discussion with mahovlich.

As for dj, even he would admit he's the last person who could judge anything objectively when it comes to the Leafs. He told us he pukes because they made the playoffs. His Leafs posts are strictly comical relief.

If Phaneuf is so bad, apparently his points stats say differently, tops ten scorers for his position. Oh, look his line mate Franson is also in the top ten. Only montreal can make the same claim. Not even Chicago and Pittsburgh, who are running away with the league, can say that. Minutes, block shots, SOG, hits, all have him in the top tier for defence. Yes, he's not the greatest skaters, but you can't ask for much more.

you always hear what an amazing leader messier was ( hes even teaching leadership courses now ) but to be honest i personally dont get it and never saw it and i watched many oilers games. could be that i just never had a keen sense of observation it but also could be possible that he provided that leadership such that we could not see or observe it....
but i wasnt on the oilers in the 80's winning cups so im not really justified in criticizing others assertions attesting to his leadership abilities.

Phaneuf's stats have nothing to do with how good a leader he is.

Maybe last year you had a point, but he has matured and improved his play and reduced his bonehead mistakes. The team has made the playoffs with him wearing the C. Give him a break . ( and I'm a Habs fan)

Gary Roberts is a leader, look what happened when Sundin was hurt and missed some games the team played with grit, fearlessness and determination and they improved. Roberts never had the "C" on his shirt but he sure as hell played like he had one.
When Sundin came back they played like Sundins character, laid back. Now I'm not saying that Sundin wasn't a great player for TO and if I'm not mistaken he lead the team in goals, assists and points but he wasn't a great captain.

Phaneuf gives the puck away as many times as Santa gives away gifts, he's out of position alot and when was the last time Phaneuf did anything to spark his team, when was the last time we saw a thunderous Phaneuf hit or a fight to ignite the team....a long, long time.

As for his ice time, sure he leads the team in ice time, who are you going to but out there ,Komisarek?
Clark, Sittler, Gilmore they all did something to ignite there team.....unlike Phaneuf.

Dion Phanuef is a pylon. Nothing more.

Phanuef is not the greatest Captain, I agree but in a Leafs team made up of young player mostly under 30, Dion right now is the best leader of the group, we may not see it on TV or on the ice but we don't know what we see in the dressing room that makes him a leader. Phaneuf had an Ok season, not Norris trophy type but a good season.

To move the Captaincy from one to another active player is very very rare and certainly not done on such a notion. This is the first year that Kadri has shone and Kessel joined the Leafs when Phaneuf was already captain.

He's not nuts. He's just so biased that his opinions on the Leafs are worthless and should be treated as such.

If he ever wants to be taken seriously, he should post more objectively. The constant Leaf bashing gets weary and stale. Admittedly I grew weary earlier than most, but it's nice to see that others are catching on.
