I just returned from a cruise of the "Track" in downtown east-end Toronto. I was listening to a new Ian Tyson CD and checking out the action on Queen, Sherbourne , Shuter and area.
F**ck does the warm weather bring out the strange ones, Maybe it's just that their clothes are removed and you can see them, and smell them, more clearly.
What a circus sideshow - wildly bowlegged girl staggering down the middle of Shuter trying to stop every car that passed ( some place between 28 and eternity); a toothless grin on what looked like a sixty year old in a green suit , still looking for a toothpick;assorted freaks of varying indeterminant ages and sexes crawling, yelling and lying on the sidewalks between Queen and Dundas.
Some cars were stopping to pick up these apparent dregs of society. I wonder how the johns feel after they let these ladies out of their cars ???
All of that being said , they are people , someone's children, who at some point lost the ability to look after themselves. Is this all drugs and mental problems or did some chance occurence push them over the edge.
There were a couple of reasonably healthy looking younger girls of the streets, but , you can sure see where they are going to end up in a few years. I hope they can find their ways.
It's another pretty sad commentary on the human race. One of many, I'm afraid. Maybe we all search in our own misguided ways.
I can certainly see why Ian Tyson left the east years ago to settle on a ranch in the foothills of Alberta. Oh for the Navajo Rug !!!
But then again, Calgary has its human tragedies as well.
You run but you can't hide.
