Let's face it. The NHL blew it back in the early 90's when teams starting building all these new facilities. They should have gone to a wider surface. At least the size of the European rinks. Players today are 1bigger overall than they were twenty years ago. There's no room to move.

The other problem is expansion. Too little talent to go around. The best hockey game I've seen in 10 years was a replay of the Montreal Canadians vs USSR on New Year's Eve. I think 1972. Check out the second period in that game. There was a span of 10-12 minutes where there was no whistle. It was great to watch.

Fianlly. Ban the trap. The trap sucks as much as that meathead behind the Leaf's bench !

1)Bring back the divisional setup. This eastern and western conference crap is boring. The only real drama (if you can call it that) is the battle for 8th place. Please. Maybe it's just me, but it seems that individual rivalries are nowhere near what they used to be.

2)Ok, i'll say it. More "Old time hockey, coach" fighting. Again, maybe it's just me, but there was nothing like a few good fights, and even an occasional bench clearer to instill a serious blood boiling hatred for the other team. Sports needs people and teams to hate as much as it needs teams and people to like. Hockey in my mind is lacking in that regard.

Take out the red line a put the game back to what it was before WW2 and the way it is in other parts of the world. This would solve the trap issue and you would see olympic style hockey more often. Let the refs call more of the cluthing, grabbing, hooking etc. so the skaters can use their skills. Last, make the goalie equipment the size it was 20 years ago and the game is back to being great. As far as following the puck on TV, it will always be a problem for people who don't understand hockey and can't follow the play. This is why Americans like basketball, its simple and thay can see the ball on TV
