What I found interesting (from what I heard on the radio) is that they can tell where the rabies came from including the type of animal and the geographic locale in which it was contracted.
I trust we're all aware that in 1819, our Governor-General, who was the Duke of Richmond, died of rabies. Legend has it the fear of hydrophobia-madness was so great that he was abandoned to die alone in a barn, in the Ottawa Valley town of Richmond where he had been visiting when he was bitten.

No-one has ever survived rabies once it developes in you. You have about 10 days from the time you are bitten until the virus kicks in. Once it kicks in - you are dead.
There was one girl in the states that they put into a deep coma and she lived to tell the tale, but she did suffer some damage as a result.
