Steve played both rhythm and lead. No second guitarist required on most of the Stax recordings on which he played.

You beat me to it. Was gonna post that. Memphis soul has had a grip on me since it first "cropped" up. On my last drive home to NYC from TO in September, that's all I listened to. Nearly drove off the road I was moving my tush so much and waving my arms and singing so loudly and, well, sooo overcome by its power and emotion and funk and "holy" spirit. Note to SPs: construct an ad with this much booty-shakin' soul and I'll be there. Knock on wood, indeed!

True Story, that ive shared here before
Many Old timers here will remember Daisy...anyway i had seen her a couple of times and one visit i asked her if i could bring over a CD, that we could dance to..I took an Otis Redding Compilation, full of slow ballads...featuring the guitar work of Steve Cropper
She admiited to me she never heard of Otis
we played it and slowdanced and by the 3rd or 4th song she was pulling my leg with her leg toward the bedroom...what a couple of hours ..lol..Thanks Otis, thanks Steve

Interesting Booker T story is that Green Onions was an improv.

They were booked to back up a singer who didn't show up.

Rather than wasting studio time they jammed to a Booker T riff.

That became Green Onions.

Interestingly I read an interview way back with Steve in Guitar Player magazine, in which he stated that his biggest ongoing fear was flubbing a note in a live performance.

This from a guy whose playing was always perfection in any live performance video I ever saw...

Otis' live performances were always energetic, but he kicked it up a notch in tracks 1 -5, recorded at a Chitlin' Circuit gig in Birmingham, Alabama. Otis was backed by the Bar-Kays for that show, rather than Booker T & the MGs. That's James Alexander playing kickass bass on I Can't Turn You Loose, (track 4). James was not on the same plane as Otis and most of the band on that tragic day almost 58 years ago.

Actually there is a video of booker T backing up Sam and Dave and he did something like that , it was actually pretty cool seeing the expression of his face .

The live Otis Redding CD is named A Soupçon of Soul, not a 'Soupcan', which is not a single word. This is an error by the original uploader to demonoid, many years ago.

Soupçon, ('Supe - sohn') literally translated as 'suspicion', is a French word often used in cooking recipes. In context, the English equivalent terms would be 'pinch', 'dash', 'sprinkle', 'hint', etc.
