He was a very close friend of my family. Im really sorry to hear this. When I was a kid he would tell me stories about his travels and the people he met.He had a picture on the wall of his office when he was interviewing Che Guevara in the middle of the jungle.It was amazing He had a great life, full of travel and interesting people. Although I haven't seen him in years Im sure he had no regrets. God speed Knowlton Im sure Silvia will be there waiting.
He was always one of the reasons for the decline of the CBC, paving the ground for the devastation that occurred under Mansbridge. Neither of them ever really understood the proper role of public broadcasting. They both thought it was to speak down to the nation.
Too bad CBC got a Nash rather than a Paiken at such a critical time.

They had authoritative voices, I can see why some feel as if they were talking down to us but that's just the manner in which they spoke.

CBC isn't circling the drain because of the bland white guy anchoring the newscast for feck's sakes. Why are you blaming the talking heads instead of the closing of foreign bureaus, staff reductions, and nonstop slashing of budgets? Blame decades of federal governments that ranged from indifferent to downright hostile towards public broadcasting. Blame shitty management that doesn't understand what a public broadcaster is supposed to be all about and that would rather spend diminishing resources buying shitty American sitcoms to broadcast at the same fucking time the American networks that every single one of us has access to broadcast them. Amateurs? Who? Something tells me you don't know much about the production crew. Give us the low down on Michael Chechik, Gabriela Schonbach, Ian Weir and Gary Harvey. Never actually watched Arctic Air, so I don't have much to say about it. I'm more of a CBC radio type anyways, and would rather see the cuts hit CBC TV and let the radio side flourish. Federal funding for CBC was approx. $100 million in 1962. It has been steadily outstripping inflation since then - based on CPI it should be about $550 million now rather than double that. The Liberals cut funding drastically to $748 million in 1999 so I'm not sure where you get 'no increase in 20 years'.Don't forget they have not had a budget increase in 20 years. FUJI is just wanting the limelight today and has pick this peccadillo to pick on.
