Mulroney took a bribe of $225,000 in $1,000 bills from Airbus and related companies in 1995. Also involved was Premier Frank Moores. The Liberals accused him of such in the Commons. Indignantly Mulroney sued for more than $50 million. Alan Rock, that useless horse-faced bastard of a justice minister , settled with Mulroney for $2.1 million. After that, it was reported that Mulroney filed a T1Adj form with CRA reporting the $225,000 bribe to be added to his income on his recently filed tax return.Sneaky guy who took bride in $100 notes as ex-PM
and shamelessly sued RCMP (or cdn government?)
for probing into his corruption.
It was wayyyyyyyy more than the $225,000.00! Even Schreiber said $300k was for Airbus and another $200k for something to do with Germany and/or some light armoured vehicle deal. Schreiber sued him over that I think.Mulroney took a bribe of $225,000 in $1,000 bills from Airbus and related companies in 1995. He had the gall to sue when he was caught and somehow, he won. No doubt, he used part of the settlement to pay his additional tax and interest. He was a POS as the PM, creating additional gun control, the despised Meech Lake Accord and the hated GST.
By the end of the Mulroney mandate, Canada would also have a goods and services tax, a highly visible tax of 7 percent introduced to replace the completely invisible manufacturer’s sales tax of 13.5 percent. But the Mulroney Conservatives proved no more capable than the Trudeau Liberals at grappling with government expenditures: by 1993, there had been no serious assault on the budget deficit, even though Ottawa was by then in an operating surplus — taking in more in taxes than it spent on programs
I met him once. He was really quite charming. At the time I thought he was trying too hard to ingratiate himself with Reagan and the Americans but in hindsight his policies for the most part were right for Canada and I was wrong. The Airbus affair was a stain on an otherwise good legacy.I was peripherally 'involved' in the PC party as a young up and comer in the early 90's. Knew several MP's but never met Mulroney. Not very likably by many, not popular in the end of his term but I respected him for what I see as loyal public service to his country. He did unpopular things like the GST but I believe he had Canada's best interests at heart. My (then) export business was killed off overnight with the GST replacing the FST but I realized that it was a better, more equitable system.
"It is clearly not popular, but we're doing it because it's right for Canada. It must be done,"
-Brian Mulroney on introducing the GST
I hope that history looks kindly on his public service to Canada.
EDITED with strikethrough because I just remembered the Airbus bribe. Fuck him and the Karlheinz Schreiber he rode out on.
Mulroney was not a Conservative. He was a Progressive Conservative. His policies were not conservative. His policies were identical to those of the John Turner Liberals. He was the last of the real Conservatives until the reform party took over.
