any one have any experience with bringing in large quantities of liquor into canada via alternative routes (ie not thru the LCBO/importers/agents)?
anyone discovered an efficient way of doing this?

Sounds as if you want to know where the easist place to cross undetected is?

Sounds illegal.

YES! My truck (STFU tboy!), has a hideaway trunk.... We went camping in the states earlier this year and there was a liquor store strike looming, so on our way down to the USA, I stopped at my favourite discount liquor store in Niagara Falls NY, (Corner of Military and Niagara Falls Blvd.) and stocked up on about $400-$500 worth of booze. On our way home... I simply packed all the booze in the hideway trunk, and put all sorts of camping gear in the truck bed making the trunk virtually invisible! :D

Importing booze above the allowable limits is illegal. It must be brought in by the various Provincial Liquor Boards.

If you're talking about personal quantities, then driving for sure. But you do risk getting caught.

it think it is illegal to import booze without paying tax on it but im not sure ;)

no not where to cross. more like method: driving, shipping, flying ?
What you are talking about is smuggling and that is illegal.

My recommendation is legal importers. But if you insist on not doing so, please do not try to make others accomplices to the proposed crime.

Then you have a bad day, they strip your vehicle down to the rims, find the booze and instead of thinking that it was a one-off, they check to see that you cross the border regularly then you not only get to pay the tax, but you get flagged for molestation at the border every time you cross... or something worse... :)

Oh, and I had a friend that used to cross via the great lakes on snow machine... He'd bring back whisky by the big red gas can...

I hear you and am well aware of the risk... I normally just bring back a couple bottles, but this was a special case (Liquor store employees were threatening to go on strike! ) and I certainly don't "fit the profile" if you catch my meaning.

Last time I was pulled over for a vehicle search was when I was 19... went over to the States for steak and lobster at Club Joey's on Pine Ave in Niagara Falls with 3 buddies... We took my bud's car which was a wreck, but it was his turn... the border guy looked at us and thought no way... and we had to go for a vehicle search, but we didn't have anything... Anyway that was 26 yrs ago now...

As per another post, I didn't have any luck having the U.S. retailer mail me the booze throught USPS/Canada Post...I got the retailer to mail it sure enough, but got a letter from customs saying you can't have booze mailed into Canada from the U.S. and that it was confiscated.

Heard the other day that the LCBO is the largest retail purchaser of booze/wine in the world. Well, with no real choice and a large captive audience, I guess I can see that.

I agree, legal importers, bite the bullet and pay the tax.
Indeed the wisest course of action.

This is not my area of expertise, but from looking around seemingly the difficulty is not getting the necessary permits and paying duty and excise tax to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. Rather it is that in every Province the only legal importer is the Provincial Liquor Control Board.

Better luck than me-- I haven't crossed the border in years. Both pre and post 9-11 they've always gone to town on whatever car I've been in as a passenger or driver. (Worse and more intimidating on the US side.) It's odd, the cars have always been OK if not good, the people mostly white and 'respectable' enough, nobody was dumb enough to have drugs on them or to have consumed them in any relevant time period, and nobody was importing / exporting anything.

The post 9-11 experiences were positively horrendous. I've basically just ruled out ever going to the states again period. Even for a layover if it can be at all helped.
