Question for the computer geeks

Back in the good old days, I was able to surf for porn to my heart's content at work. However, in the last month or so, the bastards have install a content filter. SonicWall Content Security Manager, I believe it is called.

Now, I can't even access my beloved PERB board. Could for awhile by using the IP address rather than the URL. However, they soon got wise and cut that off too. I can still access TERB that way, but I fear it is only a matter of time.

My question...anyone know how to beat this thing? Any ways around it?

Thanks

Walter

Thanks for the obvious Goober, but I fear the wife more than the company ;)

And you too Shiek, but I don't really work for the company, just use their internet system...so not sure they could really fire me.

Just thought I would ask.

Hehe.

Seriously, Walter, I could tell you how to get around them, but then I'd have to kill you.

zzap..

that works for TERB, but not for PERB (69.90.73.254) anymore. And cyber cafe is an option, but I have a fair bit of free time at the office that I would like to put to productive use ;)

but thanks anyways.

PERB works for me here as: http://69.90.73.254/

So the Sonic Filter blocks IP numbers too.
What you want to use is a Proxy server to first connect through. I have a script called CGI Proxy that you install on any server and then connect to it by webpage. you then just enter the url and it connects to it and passes the website information to you. The Sonic filter will only see you connected to the url of the Proxy server.

you can get it from here.....

Be really careful doing this at work - I used to work with a bunch of guys who had a habit of surfing for porn at work. One day we were all called in for a meeting - and lists of the sites they had visits, how often and for how long were handed out (and even read out) - complete with warnings.....

One company I worked for didn't block IPs per say....but it was like a net nanny. You'd get a blank screen logging your attempt to access the site and that it contained foul language and you couldn't access it.

Your best bet, get a laptop and surf wirelessly .... or the internet cafe. It is the only way to assure that you can access it - and it is private.

And if you owned the business, how much of the employees' time you were paying for would you allow for porn-surfing? Just curious?

These content management packages work because your PC is given information from a DHCP server (IP address, DNS server, gateway, etc.). If you can determine what the IP address range that has been assigned by the ISP and which ones are available, and what the proper DNS and gateway settings should be, you could probably defeat the content management. However, once you start futzing around with those settings, you might screw up something else and then not only would you be caught surfing to "non-business" sites, but you have openly tried to defeat it. You would find your a$$ on the front steps pretty quick.

to oldjones...

I am not employed by the company..I am an independent contractor who works in the building and uses their internet access. If I waste my day surfing, I cost them nothing. The filters are in place for the actual employees of the company...so off your high horse my friend.

And no, I don't want to start futzing around with settings..I am no computer man, and would likely FUBAR the system.

thanks anyways.

Well u r proably given a general account and a general range from the DHCP unless they have things set up by MAC address which is what i do at my clients.
Is it your computer or theirs?

Most companies have an 'acceptable use' policy, either explicit or implied (with 'acceptable use' being defined by them.) When using their resources you are bound by their policy.
