They also check the name on the card against the credit card - if that's your method of payment.
They don't take credit except for Amex...

If paying cash, you will not have an issue. They don't really "check" the card. They scan it to make sure its valid, but thats about it.

It's never made any sense to me why people pay to go to a store.Your going their to put money in their pockets and you also pay to get in the store? Seems f***ed up to me.

I hope Costco pays their marketing people well for the fine job they have done reeling in the big fish.

Because the cost of most items at Costco are about the sale price on the same items at other stores and they have good return policies. I was not a member for some years, but became a member again when I wanted to buy some sunglasses. In the stores around here the sunglasses were $450, at Costco they are about $200. Now there is a Costco close to me, and I can buy gas for about 5 cents/liter less, and because I pass by Costco during the days, there is no line ups. If the Costco store is close it works out well to be a member. Also when you spend money at Costco, a percentage goes towards your membership fee.

Another question... My membership dues were due last October. If I return after this October, are they gonna charge me for two years?

No ounce membership expires you can't buy , so there is nothing to charge you about.. The card gets scanned each time

Was at Costco today and asked the casher if they check the cards and catch people who are using other people's cards, the answer was yes at the cash and at returns.

I live in Ottawa, I go to the Innes Rd. store. Don't know where TP goes.

Always in and around GTA, usually the Yorkdale, Warden or Markham (Woodbine) stores.

I've seen them bounce people in the check-out lines, too.

If I remember right, the whole membership started to get around the old Sunday shopping laws.

Since it closed to the public on Sundays and and only open to members, they were aloud to open.

Not quite.

If you have an Executive membership, then you get 2% "cash back" - in the form of a cheque to be used in the store & cannot be used to buy the membership
Not correct, I have used the cheque to renew my membership for the last couple of years.
About $90 for a $110 membership.

Get the no-fee AMEX Costco card and you get 2% back anyways. If you pay up for the Executive membership, you get more back (plus other perqs)

I used to have the "Executive Card" but it never paid off.

Last year, I got a coupon for 40 bucks, and the Executive membership is 110 I believe (vs. 55 for a regular one). The year before, it paid off, but only slightly and the year before that, I got the short end of the stick as well. So I went to them to just have a regular membership and they tried (twice) to talk me out of it, showing me that I "already" had accumulated 10 bucks this year, blah blah blah, and I would lose that 10 bucks if I downgraded to a regular card. (They also pulled this a couple of years ago when I first got the card and realized it wasn't paying for me to have it and wanted to downgrade, only at the time, I bought their angle.)

For me, it's not worth having the more expensive membership.

If you drop 10 grand a year at Costco, I suppose it's worth it.

True. They told me they mostly catch people when the gender on the card does not match up with the person, and they catch people returning stuff on their parent's card. I have never noticed someone being questioned about their card at the checkout.

I have a regular membership. I use Costco for just two reasons. I love their meat and the ability to shop in bulk. Saves me running back and forth to the grocery store. Executive Card is not worth it for me.

In my experience, they take the card as soon as it's your turn to pay and keep it until you have paid and collected your stuff. Yes gas is cheaper but waiting in line for it burns fuel as well, there's always long lines.

Their broiled chicken is FANTASTIC.
Gas lines are not always long. I often only have one car in front of me, depends whether you go at peak time when everybody else does. If there is more than a couple minutes wait I skip it as the couple bucks savings aren't worth waiting for to me. Most times it is OK.

I'm an early riser and out around 5:30am. After I've had my coffee I often stop by Costco gas at 6:30. Never encountered a line up. However I always pass on the worm.

I got talked into an Executive Membership the year I bought a TV there. The TV itself accounted for half the upgrade fee in the rebate. However, I didn't spend as much as I thought and got a "check" for $40. Also, when I bought the upgrade, I wasr guaranteed that if I didn't spend enough to get a big enough rebate to cover the upgraded fee, it would be rebated anyway. Of course, a year later, there was no such record of such an offer taking place. I went back to the business membership we always had. I never even got the black card because the line was long the day I did the upgrade.
