I had to wait impatiently to find out who was coming with me, saw it Thursday night.
I was both elated and mildly disappointed by the film. It's a crowd pleaser, highlighting what made great. They were strident but never decadent - no creeping malaise for them. They were musical maestros yet they didn't take themselves seriously. They swept audiences of their feet with their virtuosity and their sense of fun. They were considered a passe band during Live Aid yet they set the massive audience at Wembley and the donation lines on fire. That part of the film happened, but Freddie didn't have AIDS during the event. Although I suspect he was HIV+ at the time. What I found mildly disappointing, the relationship between Freddie and Mary Austin wasn't fully formed. I wanted to know what made her so special? She inherited the copyrights to Freddie's songs and his estate, Freddie was loyal to her even when she took a lover. She remains an enigma, although Lucy Bonyton is a knockout.
Hopefully an indy film will be made exploring the relationship, that will be worth waiting for.
