hiya danibbler, yup less power, less weight...I do not mind 4:3 ones if they can scroll text without flicker...then I can program fine.

only way I'd buy a 16:9/10 one, is if it is a model which allows the panel to swivel 90degrees and lock...of course it'd have to be a really hi-res one...so I can still have over 1280 page width.

I like the old IBM Clicky Keyboards and decided to go with a UniComp Keyboard. They are a company that bought the patent for the clicky keyboard design from IBM. This video shows pretty-much everything

Overall, I'm impressed, but not too impressed. Pros include a very close clicky feel and sound for the keyboard. Cons however, construction and materials are not as good as the old IBM's (but what is). It's unfortunate, though that they put crappy plastic around what would otherwise be a great keyboard. Using the crappy stuff does make a difference when the rest of the keyboard is so good.

hiya 4tees, get crafty...take apart the keyboard shell, and make one out of wood or something ifya don't like cheap plastic...trick it out with a dremel tool.

What is this flicker you speak of?

Any flicker I've encountered is usually due to an improper 'refresh rate' setting in both Windows and Linux machines. Once the refresh rate is changed, all monitor flicker vanished.

hiya Hobbyer, likewise I did not want to blow $150 to find out about those boards...after reading the other mechanical keyboard links I posted, decided to look for something with brown Cherry MX switches, was worried the blues or other types would be too noisy.

how is the click Das Keyboard, has Cherry MX blue switches right? is it distracting compared to the one with Cherry MX brown switches?

I have both the blue and the brown switches. Both are great but I prefer the clickier sound of the blue. The "Silent" das uses the cherry brown switch which I also have and use at work for quieter operation. Yes I spent $300 on keyboards, but they are something i use everyday. The enjoyment is tangible.

hiya WoodPecker, yes old CRT monitors whereya can set 75hz and higher are great...some older LCD monitors though it did not matter, and certain apps would flicker while scrolling text when using scrollbars...so out of habit I try to use spacebar or PageUp/PageDown when usin laptops/netbooks.

right on Hobbyer, yup I wanna try blue switches too yes, having a crappy keyboard is like not using an optical mouse or trackball, some people are gluttons for punishment.

any problems with Das Keyboard? I almost got one...a review I saw, someone complained that they always have to clean it because it shows fingerprints around the keys...I've used keyboards with mirror like finish around the keys before, actually kinda good because it forces you to maintainit better, wiping down with Windex or whatever on a more regular basis.

Only had flicker with CRT monitors set at 60hz. Once it was changed to ~ 70-80hz all flicker vanished.

Nice crisp feel to the keys, a nice heavy heft that doesn't slide around when you type, and the noise when I type drives everyone around me mad (heh heh).

hiya Barsoom, cool...buckling springs are hardcore...I was tempted to get a Unicomp, but likely too loud for home, in office on the otherhand, the clackity-clack comin from my programming dungeon would be impressive ha!

@Zorlack: The Unicomp keyboard would be great if there ever was a zombie apocalypse; it's heavy enough to use as a club, and you can pop off the individual keys to use as caltrops so you can run away! Seriously, it's a rock solid keyboard that doesn't have a lot of dumb short-cut buttons (i.e. email, messenger, web-cam) that nobody uses.

Just get the Arctosa Razer. Its much better than Unicomp. Its lighter, thinner, more efficient, and it even looks better.
