Wow

Just heard this yesterday.

Corus Entertainment, owner of the long since mighty Q has fired Andy Frost and Scholes and Joynes

Today is the last Psychedelic pSunday. Sad. I love working a round the house on a Sunday afternoon and tuning in to Andy and Psychedelic pSunday. Now some MBA somewhere thinks he or she has a better idea. (Probably that means either replacing him with a kid making 30 grand a year, or some show recorded in a studio in Texas or the like and emailed to the radio station.

I am not a fan of Corus.

I still miss Martin Streek from his CFNY days and his live to air show on Sunday nights.

I hope Andy finds another gig somewhere else. Probably harder than ever though.

I wish him and the others all the best.

Probably down to Derringer and McCown as the only untouchables in Toronto
Listen to Toronto Miked podcast, he has a lot of fan590 alum as guests as well as DJs that have been fired dozens of times.

Andy Frost is unlistenable.

Years back when he was doing Leafs talk, you couldn't get one unbiased comment out of this mouth. Listening to the station after watching the game downtown at the arena or a pub and driving home, and as a hockey fan you want to hear some decent analysis of what happened, since you don't get that live and you can barely hear anything at a Jack Astors.

Yet all you heard was homer comments as if the Leafs should have won all the games.

I'm not even sure about Derringer to tell you the truth.

He's the last of the old guard on Q107, but without Maureen Holloway in the mornings, the show is not the same. Jennifer valentyne just doesn't have the chops for radio in my opinion.

Martin Streek committed suicide shortly after he was let go from 102.1 :apologetic:

When he did those live to air shows from the Phoenix, I was usually at the club, lots of times playing pool. He would often come play pool with me and my buddy and give us free drink tickets. Sad.

What I liked even more on Sunday nights was the ongoing history of new music with Allen Cross on 102.1

I guess that came on before the live to air from Martin.

Holy crap, those are some names out of the past!

Swear to god I havent thought of Andy frost in 30 yrs. how on earth did he keep a job in radio this long?

I’m sure they will package him out and he can go do gigs DJ’ing at Rama. Good for him for being employed for so long in a medium that is notorious for sacking people after a bad third quarter

I would imagine that many of these radio shows no longer have the audiences they once did, especially with so many different forms of media available.

Old timers would have a higher than average salary and from a financial standpoint it would make sense to let them go and have either a young newbie DJ or an automated program put in its place.

I remember years ago it was common place for the group of people I hung with to tune in to the Q on a Sunday and tune out as we enjoyed the weekend. I think the only time I listen to the radio these days is when I am in my vehicle.

The end of an era.

Yes I always enjoyed Allen Cross' show learning about bands before, during, and after the fame.

In an era of so much competing media, Q107's playlist is severely limited. I can't remember ever hearing songs from Deep Purple, Sabbath, and so many other classic bands on Q107, never mind newer (but still old now) like Metallica and Nirvana. For a rock station, they're kinda sad.

Kind of like Much Music. Growing up Much Music was a staple in all my friends houses. With so many different media formats, there was no use for it anymore. I don't even know why they do the MMVA's anymore, as they have no VJ's, and nobody watches it anymore.

I was never a big Q107 listener as it played mostly old school rock, and I was more into hard core stuff a long with hip-hop, but once in a while I would listen to Andy and his Psychedelic Sundays. I found there to be something very soothing about his voice. I really enjoyed hearing him the last 5 years as the nostalgia grew on me. It's a shame all these different medias now are killing the stuff I grew up on.

.
Best one I ever heard was the one he did on Alice in Chains. Extremely insightful, and detailed the last dark years of Layne Staley up until his death.

Didn't know that about Martin Streek, very sad.

MM became pointless after Teresa Roncon left. Do they still play music on Q, can't see them interrupting their commercial programming.

Yes, I was aware that Martin Streek committed suicide. That was tragic. Martin did a GREAT show and he truly loved the music that CFNY played (the alternative / new wave music of the 80's) and he loved the fans. He was a huge Depeche Mode fan (I am as well). I would regularly tune into his Sunday night shows throughout the 90's because it always took me back to my youth.

Corus fired him and he lost his footing (metaphorically speaking) and killed himself. I think CFNY replaced him with nothing. They had two air-head chicks on there for about a minute and then I don't know what. I used to listen to nothing but CFNY and Q107 when I needed my Led Zeppelin / Beatles / Rolling Stones / Pink Floyd fix. When Humble and Fred left CFNY (the biggest dumbest mistake they ever made), CFNY hired Dean Blundell. He was UNLISTENABLE. Toilet humor a la Howard Stern. Like a crude-assed giggly high school boy. With Humble and Fred gone and Martin gone, CFNY was no more. (CFNY is also a corus channel.)

It's funny, but the big rock bands are pretty much all gone, or reduced to just touring now to rake in the bucks. The entire creativity of rock and roll has been reduced to small scale stuff. It's the result of file sharing killing the market and the internet and access to information altering the way young people listen to music. And frankly, changing times and attitudes toward music. Most young people are into the mass marketed stuff that is just meaningless drivel to me. (Kind of reminds me of the disco era, without the funky clothes.) I keep waiting for the next Dylan or Beatles or U2 or REM, but it's just not happening.

It is what it is I suppose.

But I will truly miss Andy Frost and his show. I can only imagine what crap they will replace him with.

When Q started playing Honeymoon Suite, that's when I moved to Serius/XM. Honeymoon Suite - the band that makes you beg for Kim Mitchell.

There were a couple of MM female VJs who went into acting. One (who's name escapes me) showed up on Sinefeld. Amanda Walsh did reasonably well she's currently on Shitt's Creek. But none of them topped Teresa Roncon - a nerd's wet dream she wuz.

These days she's the Chairman of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. An she's still irresistible!
