Im so sorry to hear about your loss. The best thing you can do for your pet is be there when you put them to sleeep it gives them comfort knowing you are there for them. I've had to put my 2 down some time ago . A 13 year old lab male an a 12 year old Malamute female. She just seemed to give up after her mate left...She was lost..
Now I have a 12 year old golden retriever an I know in my heart what is coming....

Our family dog was put down in my early 20's, I wasn't that broken up, knew it was his time and there was no other option, time to move on. He wasn't my dog, maybe that was it, I don't remember grieving at all.

I've never had my 'own' dog, maybe that would be different.

I think I was able to accept old age as the reason, no need to grieve that much, much like when a grandparent dies, they simply reach the end.

Real sorry to hear about your dog.

I have two dogs and love them dearly. Some people say that they are a hinderance because you can't stay out too long. But honestly I am happy to come home to them.

Sounds like you are an animal person. Have some time to grieve.

Look forward to hearing about your new puppy. I'm not trying to be flippant, but for me I can't imagine not having a dog..... well except for if I was not physically able to walk and care for it.
Thanks frank, its already in the works ;)

Have been down that road myself, I had a cat for 16 yrs. just me and him and having to put him down was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. When I got home it felt like I was in the wrong house.

We know when we get a pet that this eventual outcome is inevetible, and yet we still allow ourselves to feel such pain. Of course the upside is the amount of joy they bring, and how they teach us, and love us unconditionaly.
I'm sorry for your loss, but consider yourself lucky to have had his company for so many years.
I have a kitten that completely owns me right now, I don't even want to imagine my house without her.

Sorry for your loss Titalian.

I've never had pets at home but my dad had 2 dogs at his shop - a hunting dog and his guard dog. We loved it when we could take them with us outdoors, or just being around them at his workplace.

Neighbours had pets that we played with.

When we moved to a different business location, we took a stray cat to combat mice. She had kittens which were real attention getters.

I realize how close or attached one can get to pets.

All dogs go to heaven.

Sorry for your loss Titalian!

A short tale for you:

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....."

So so sorry for your loss

After a very bitter fight with my portents I walked towards the door in order to end the tension. As I headed to the door my dad said in anger. "If you walk out the door, don't ever come back." I didn't even break my stride. Walked out finished packing and moved across country. A week later I find myself in California looking out the over the hills where there was a terrible accident. My parents on their way to talk to me had been hit by a drunk driver and both had been killed. It wasn't until the next day when a family member flew to my home to tell me what had happened just down my street the day before. I had no idea it was then. The next couple of years were very hard to keep it together. My dog kept me alive somehow by knowing I was hurting so bad. He never left my side and would bring me his bone... Or at least that's how I saw it. He knew I was broken and in the edge but when I was with him he kind of looked at me like he knew what I was contemplating. He seemed to know when I needed a kiss. Before that he was around the house but he changed when I changed.

When I had to put him down 11 months ago. He was sitting in my lap... Looking up to me as to says I'll be ok and so will you. I cried like a baby holding him, kissing him. Eye to eye, head to head while he passed. It took an hour to hand him over in his blanket. He saved my life and I couldn't thank him enough or say sorry enough. He was my best friend. I think of him everyday but when I do now it makes me smile. Still can't look at anither dog without turning into a kid with them

They are on earth for a purpose so I totally understand all the pain you are all feeling.

Btw... My dog was the best wingman in the world .

Hope you find comfort

I’m having a hard time with this, but our oldest true friend and pet Zack, sixteen years young, has reached His limit of life,
he can hardly hear and his eyesight is next to none and he also has a hard time walking falling over very often and now my ex has to carry him up the stairs.
So my ex and I as well as my daughter Have come to a decision to end his life. With all of his complications is still a very loving dog. When younger what a hell of a personality he had, bit of a yapper
but that’s what made it him so special. In his early years he could hear people walking a block away and would start yapping
(Never fuck with his domain and his environment) I’m going to miss that. We are having him euthanized tomorrow.
My ex and I have seven animals between us and we have taken care of all of them (You couldn’t phantom the vet bills). Except in Zack’s case.
There is no more to be done and I guess that’s What I’m struggling with. The process will be hard as we have to witness him dying after the injection.
I don’t particularly like this process, but on second thought I owe him that.

On a side note, Zack is a Schnauzer. I’ve had animals most of my life but nothing can come close to the dedication, loyalty
love and protectiveness of this breed, also they are probably one of the very few of the smaller breeds recommended for young children.
And he proved thart to us over and over to again.

This is not him but his clone. When he was a young boy.

As I said, I've had pets most of my life, and they were all great, but this one just captured my heart. He was 4 months old when we brought him home.
Four months later he owned the place. LOL.
Let’s Just say I will miss him. :(
So Sorry to hear this. I had to put down my dog last year and it was honestly the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It sounds nuts, but I feel sometimes our pets are nicer and less selfish than humans. They love us unconditionally. You feel guilty that maybe you could have done more for his life. Trust me, for a grown man, I cried like a baby. It takes a big man to admit this. So sorry, What a beautiful little dog. He had you to love him and you did your very best. Knowing you from the board and how great of a person I think you are. That your Dog had a great Dad. You can count on that!!! He knows this too. He feels the love. They are smarter than us.
Hang in there my friend. I feel for you.

Pets can bring a lot of joy and that forms a solid connection. The loss of that can be very hard. I've been through it quite a few times now. But as tough as it is, I'd never go back and change my decision to take a pet on.

Well said, We never out live our pets, but at least we give them a great life with love as long as they do live, and giving a dog or cat a good home is the best thing we can do as humans.
My heart really goes out to Titalian this week.

I am very sorry to hear that Titalian.

When my old German Shepherd was dying she hugged me like crazy for the last 24 hours. She knew she was going and was showing her love. I am sure there was pure love for you. :)

There are dogs in this world that never ever have any love from humans. Zack was lucky!

Oh man sim, what a terrible way to lose your parents! A good reminder to cherish the people and pets especially when you're angry with them because they can be gone in an instant.

On top of yo mama!
i always get a tear in my eye whenever i am at the vet with my dog and see other animals suffering. or even on the news about stories of animal cruelty.
But show me some human suffering/tragedy on the news and I am all de-sensitized to it. how weird is that?

So true bishop, but my daughter will be right beside me when the time comes, Zack was a gift to her, when she was 4 yrs old and he (Zack) was 4 months old. My daughter is 19 now.
Its all part of maturing and growing up and the realities of what we've been given by the powers to be, what ever they maybe. Its all good Love.
As far a loosiing her my daughter, I don't even want to go there !
It is good that kids are raised up with loving pets, no doubt your daughter is a better person because of zack. I might be cruel but I think it is healthy for a young person to experience the loss of a pet early in life, something substantial like a loving dog or cat but not so big like a parent or sibling, they will know that life goes on even through great loss.

Zack passed away at about 4pm yesterday wrapped in a blanket with me holding him and with his family huddled closely around him, as he took his last breath :(
There was much emotion from all of us, but he went peacefully. I grief but I'm also at peace, as he is no longer suffering and probably there near Rainbow Bridge.
Thank you Iris and another member who had earlier sent me this Inspiring poem.

I'm grateful to all the encouraging and thoughtful posts on this thread. I see there are many of us who are animal lovers here Thank God.

On that note seeing that Zack came from a loving family, he inspired me to post this video for the less fortunate of his species. Don't worry, this one has a great ending.

Humans are duplicitous by nature. Dogs are straight shooters without a deceptive bone in their bodies. I think we care so much about them because they are so innocent and loyal in that regard.

On the road with Willy
I had four terrier crosses all from the same litter. Never thought about the end game.
They all had to be put down within about a year of each other.
I thought I was a tough guy. It still shatters me to think about losing them all in so short a time.
It's been a few years, I would love another dog or two, but I can't stand the thought of eventually losing them to.
Really sorry about your loss.
