All political. The dems are positioning themselves as the champion of the shrinking middle class and working class to get votes. Nothing more. From the article "As minimum wage fights have gone increasingly local, Democrats have led the charge, working to define themselves as the party of blue-collar workers while casting Republicans as defenders of corporations and big business."

Pretty cynical. Some might actually have working/middle class roots and believe it, OMG.

Either way Democratic mayors and councils across the nation are not waiting for congress, they are raising the MW themselves. bravo.

Who dragged politics into politics OMFG. If the shoe fits for GOP let them oppose MW. They can also lose the future elections. Raising MW creates pressure to raise all wages.

11.4% of Americans own a business. The rest are employees. Folks here talk as if most people own a biz. They don't, most are employees.

Which in turn puts upward pressure on all goods and services...which in turn generates more tax revenue...where does the circle end?
All good things. BTW the circle never ends.

I tried, I really did but I can't for the life of me dumb my brain down to your level of thinking...humour me.
If higher wages pushed up inflation, I would do it anyway assuming the higher wages outstrip the inflation. Competitive biz cannot pass along all increased costs. Im sure the ladies on here have had many increased costs but donation rates are pretty stable why? Because they must remain competitive.

To stay in business, you absolutely pass along rising costs, utilities do it, sports franchises do it, every business does it.

True, however the referenced article was specifically about the dems and this strategy. Anything of value to contribute or is this the best you can do?

Uh, no they don't.. When competition is alive and well you eat what you can so you can stay afloat.. Making less money is infinitely preferable to making NO money (a result of going out of business for not being able to stay competitive).. If your costs go up and your competition isn't raising your prices, then you're going to sit quiet and look for "efficiencies" until one of your competition says "uncle".. Business can be like a game of Chicken that way..

You know we can read your posts, right?

Awwww, you think you add value to these discussions?!?!? That's so cute...

Keep it up son.. It's that nonsensical irrational confidence that drives folks to do things like become mayor of Toronto.

Cities are the political future of USA.
Actually cities in the U.S. have been loosing population for decades. Most new factories, office parks etc. . . are outside cities.

This is actually a major problem for mass transportation in most U.S. cities as they are designed to bring commuters into and out of the center city.

The shrinking middle class is a big issue. A massive problem. It needs a solution, urgently. It's the biggest long-term threat to democracy there is. No foreign government is ever going to topple American democracy, but if the US becomes classified enough, with too much power in the hands of too few people, then it will internally decay into something other than a democracy. The fact that you already need a couple of billion on your side to make a run for the presidency should already worry you about who can afford to bankroll candidates. It used to be that the rich, collectively, could not outspend the grass roots donations of $10 here and $50 there. These days--they can. That should worry you, never mind from an economics perspective, from a pure political perspective.

However. I don't believe in fake solutions. You can't legislate PI = 3, and you can't mask the underlying problems in the economy by legislating against it.

We have some sort of imbalance that is being caused by some combination of free trade, the development of overseas markets, and technological advance. We DO need solve that. We DO need a growing middle class, or else everything you think you know about the political system in the US will get turfed out the window over the next hundred years or so.
