If higher wages pushed up inflation, I would do it anyway assuming the higher wages outstrip the inflation. Competitive biz cannot pass along all increased costs. Im sure the ladies on here have had many increased costs but donation rates are pretty stable why? Uh, no they don't.. When competition is alive and well you eat what you can so you can stay afloat.. Making less money is infinitely preferable to making NO money (a result of going out of business for not being able to stay competitive).. If your costs go up and your competition isn't raising your prices, then you're going to sit quiet and look for "efficiencies" until one of your competition says "uncle".. Actually cities in the U.S. have been loosing population for decades. Most new factories, office parks etc. . . are outside cities.Cities are the political future of USA.
This is actually a major problem for mass transportation in most U.S. cities as they are designed to bring commuters into and out of the center city.
The shrinking middle class is a big issue. A massive problem. It needs a solution, urgently. It's the biggest long-term threat to democracy there is. No foreign government is ever going to topple American democracy, but if the US becomes classified enough, with too much power in the hands of too few people, then it will internally decay into something other than a democracy. The fact that you already need a couple of billion on your side to make a run for the presidency should already worry you about who can afford to bankroll candidates. It used to be that the rich, collectively, could not outspend the grass roots donations of $10 here and $50 there. These days--they can. That should worry you, never mind from an economics perspective, from a pure political perspective.All political. However. I don't believe in fake solutions. You can't legislate PI = 3, and you can't mask the underlying problems in the economy by legislating against it.
We have some sort of imbalance that is being caused by some combination of free trade, the development of overseas markets, and technological advance. We DO need solve that. We DO need a growing middle class, or else everything you think you know about the political system in the US will get turfed out the window over the next hundred years or so.
