So after hurricane season, if there's anything left of the place, any recommendations for a nice all-inclusive resort there for a week?

Around a grand or less each.

Never been yet, and there's so much to choose from online.

Haven't been in a few years, but normally, most of the 4 and 5 star places are good.
Bear in mind that what they consider 4 or 5 star will not be what north American standards are.

Also consider that the real attraction there is the beach and it goes on for miles and miles and is shared by all the resorts.
So, if the beach is your priority, the choices are many.
If you're driven by drinks, food, and excursions, you'll have to do some homework. Still plenty of choices, but not as obvious.

You could try a travel agent. Tell them what your preferences are and they'll hook you up. Probably with a place they've visited themselves. Ask if they've been there.

You may have trouble finding a place in Punta Cana for under $1000. Puerto Plata would be no problem at that price though. Only difference is the colour of the sand.

I didn't like the food at the Punta Cana resort I went to. The food at the Mexican resorts are much better.

Although I found the beaches and nature/flowers beautiful, not much to do...
When I go to all inclusive resorts, I don't have a high expectation of on-site entertainment, and I don't pay for excursions that take me out of the resort. We are content to hang around the beach for most of the day while eating and drinking all we want.

When I go to an all inclusive beach destination, all I want to do is unplug for a week, do some snorkeling, and relax.
Maybe an excursion if there is something particularly special in the area.

Excursions are nice but so expensive, 50-60 USD/person, or more. It gets expensive for a family of four. You would think they would be a little cheaper in a poor country like Mexico.
