There was one of those 'tank-like' self-cleaning deals a couple of blocks east of the British Museum near The Lamb Tavern that saved my guts once in the '90s. It was really clean, particularly for about 1am on a Saturday. It was alot cleaner than any Tube Station bogs I've come across, particular Euston(what a dump that place was), and alot cleaner than most pub toilets(even in 'posh' places). I think it cost me about 50p.
I saw one in the Downtown core in San Jose recently, but it didn't look too promising from the outside(and I didn't neeed to go anyway).

The only place in the world where it was worth paying was in Lucern, Swirterland. THe bathrooms/cublicles/portables where immaculates.
Yes! also, I remember being travelling on a train for a few days and feeling totally gross, after arriving in Zurich
I paid 10 euros to take a dump, shower, and shave in a this luxurious and pristine bathroom in the train station
I didn't want to leave!

Tim Hortons is open 24 hours...they are everywhere. Even if you have to go in and buy a small coffee or a cookie. You can use the bathroom and get a treat. The bathrooms are almost always very clean and fresh. As a woman I would rather find a Tims and buy something then use a portta potty pay bathroom. Who use public bathrooms more then woman. It is not the money it is the pre convieved idea of its cleanliness. Bathrooms can get very messy and smelly very quickly.

I have avoided free public bathrooms and gone to a Tims or Mcdonalds and bought a bottle of water just to use their bathroom.

If there is a way to provide a clean fresh enviroment then I would pay. I just think it may be a hard sell.

If u think about it - Tim Horton's is already running a portupotty business. They provide very clean, maintained washroom facility services to the public at late/odd hours when everyone else is closed and all other buildings are closed and locked. For the remote portupotty's charge a dollar? The Tim Horton's has the rule in every one of their stores, that anyone from the public can use their washroom facilities, only if they're Tim Horton's customers, only if they buy something, most things are at least a dollar's worth, nothing less. So yeah, if you dont buy anything then you cant use their washroom facilities. Same principles apply for the portupotty business. So, Tim Horton's is already running a portupotty business.

I been over to europe and south america and the caribbean. ( BTW people actually do #2 on the street of south america ) The only place in the world where it was worth paying was in Lucern, Swirterland. THe bathrooms/cublicles/portables where immaculates. Then again I did arrive after clean up time. This will make the street smell even worse because nobody will pay to piss for a dollar. I been to Paris and it stunk outside the train stations because of piss. Not to mention the dog poos on the sidewalks also.
Paris spend a lot of effort to rid themself of the dog poo capital, at least as of last year. Automated toilet across from Asian museum was clean as a whistle. The one across from the courtyard where many movies been shot for excellent Eiffel tower backdrop.

In a very dark place
The BA arrivals lounge in Term 4 LHR is great. They have the personal shower change rooms and complementary massage. They will shine your shoes and press your suit while you shower. When travelling with spousal person , or better yet someone else, the large showers hold two and compensate for any missed mile high opportunities during the flight.

do you think that concept would work? they would cost a dollar or two to use
when you're absolutely about to explode and it's late (or early) and there are no accessible washrooms around, I'm sure more than a few people wouldn't mind shelling a bit of money to avoid an accident
obviously I'm talking about #2

the washrooms would be well maintained of course too
Would they have a "glory hole" for a little anonymous entertainment;)

Anybody remember the pay toliets at Union Stn? Use to call 'em Johny Cash, lol. Anybody that knew there way around though would never use them. Just cross over in the tunnel and go to Royal York. Don't think that concept would work in Toronto, too many free ones around.

Between a rock and a hard place
This city used to be full of nice shop owners happy to let people use the restroom. Not all of them insisted you buy something first. Problem is that today people have no respect. They abuse the privelege by being messy and ruin it for the rest of us.

I don't think being messy has anything to do with it. A lot of places in downtown never clean their washrooms properly with or without people who are not customers coming in to use them. The reason why most places now have signs saying customers only is because of crack smokers and homeless people.

I dont think this idea is gonna fly but you're welcome to try.

If you do go belly-up in a few years I'll at least know where to get a good deal on a truckload of 2nd hand porto-potties :D

Maybe a good idea as I'd be a bit concerned going to Tim's now if I had a bit of gas. Hot like fire.

Ba dum bum!

We already have these. Theyre called restaurants. Just go in and buy a $2 pop can, and before they hand it over, ask for the washroom key.

Personally I'd pay a dollar more for cleaner washrooms. Beware of the Church n Wellesley Pizza Pizza, unless you like the sight of a solution of blood, feces, semen, vomit, coke, pee and pizza chunks.

Oh the price you pay not to shit your pants
