Franchise-mad Hollywood is gearing up for a sixth film in the Die Hard series, with Bruce Willis eyed to reprise his role as scrappy yet unbeatable everyman hero John McClane.
Director Len Wiseman, who directed the fourth film, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are teaming up to develop the project, according to industry publications The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and Variety.
The working title for the proposed film is Die Hard: Year One.
The filmmakers are purportedly searching for a screenwriter to pen a tale that will serve as a prequel to the original film – exploring the backstory of McClane as a rough and tumble New York cop – but also serve as a sequel that sees Willis, 60, return as the unkillable hero now entrenched in the pantheon of Hollywood action figures.
Released in 1988, Die Hard was a box office hit and vaulted Willis – until then best known for TV's Moonlighting – to Hollywood A-list status.
Four Die Hard sequels followed over the years, with the entire franchise grossing more than $1.4 billion US at the worldwide, according to tracking site Box Office Mojo.
The last film – 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard – earned more than $304 million US worldwide, but was also widely panned by critics and dubbed the worst of the franchise.
