In respects I found the transition from PR to 80's Alternative somewhat seamless. There is a distinct carry over from one to the other. Maybe made a little too scary with the convergence of Yes and the Buggles...
But then again for as much as PR was my genre it was still an also ran for the time. In retrospect I suppose much of it was fairly self indulgent and probably largely responsible for what I would call "prop stage acts" but so what.
Given the lamentable late 70's followed by nearly 20 yeas of Baby Boomers crushing anything new, (ever wonder why Elton John etc. are still playing major venues and not Vegas where they belong?), with the exception of the alternative and indepedent music PM is probably the last true form of music dating back from about 1995. That's nealry a 20 year span on "NUTHIN'".
Other favs, admittedly lots of inbreeding of various bands going on in this list...
Rick Wakeman - who still refuses to stop producing even when he should. All this effort isn't worth CD upon CD of coal just to find the one diamond somewhere in every 3 or 4 releases).
UK - despite John Wettons belief that all PM bands had to have a Greg Lake sounding singer.
The Nice/Atomic Rooster - Keith and Karl, although The Nice laid the foundations for PM.
Asia - don't kill me, the first record was a welcome respite in 1980 given "Boston" "The Knack" and an ELO tour that saw a flying saucer descend upon the stage, even if Asia was a terrible idea. Can you imagnie that Polydor (?) signed that band on for a 10 record option!!!!
BIll Bruford, Tony Banks, and of course King Crimson and Fripp/Eno have already been mentioned.
The big question is does anyone own Pete Sinfield's solo LP? I'd like to find the other guy who bought it!
