*reminisces* In The court Of The Crimson King...

For some reason, Fripp seemed to lose it with The Bears - little too 'pop friendly' for my liking. Guess we'll have to wait and see if there are any vanity efforts of the solo kind...

An Atomic Rooster reunion tour would be kind of cool. They could even do indorsements for Geritol! lol

Is Saga still around ?

BTW Eno is still very active, Brain Eno that is, up in the forefront of music tech development as well as producing. He will be around for a long while.

Actually, smiley27 I do agree. I was just disappointed with The Bears. There was some serious musicianship wasted on those releases.

As for Phil Collins, man... that isn't pop. That's tree sap. I get a freakin' cavity just listening to a few bars. lol

Sure as hell don't compare to Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

ELP is no more...
Yes is now history...
Uncle Festive is toast...
now even Rush is doing cover tunes...

...who else longs for the days of aggressive prog rock?
In respects I found the transition from PR to 80's Alternative somewhat seamless. There is a distinct carry over from one to the other. Maybe made a little too scary with the convergence of Yes and the Buggles... ;)

But then again for as much as PR was my genre it was still an also ran for the time. In retrospect I suppose much of it was fairly self indulgent and probably largely responsible for what I would call "prop stage acts" but so what.

Given the lamentable late 70's followed by nearly 20 yeas of Baby Boomers crushing anything new, (ever wonder why Elton John etc. are still playing major venues and not Vegas where they belong?), with the exception of the alternative and indepedent music PM is probably the last true form of music dating back from about 1995. That's nealry a 20 year span on "NUTHIN'".

Other favs, admittedly lots of inbreeding of various bands going on in this list...

Rick Wakeman - who still refuses to stop producing even when he should. All this effort isn't worth CD upon CD of coal just to find the one diamond somewhere in every 3 or 4 releases).

UK - despite John Wettons belief that all PM bands had to have a Greg Lake sounding singer.

The Nice/Atomic Rooster - Keith and Karl, although The Nice laid the foundations for PM.

Asia - don't kill me, the first record was a welcome respite in 1980 given "Boston" "The Knack" and an ELO tour that saw a flying saucer descend upon the stage, even if Asia was a terrible idea. Can you imagnie that Polydor (?) signed that band on for a 10 record option!!!!

BIll Bruford, Tony Banks, and of course King Crimson and Fripp/Eno have already been mentioned.

The big question is does anyone own Pete Sinfield's solo LP? I'd like to find the other guy who bought it!

The Strawbs (David Cousins) had some interesting stuff.

I think Bowie and Pink Floyd could be included in this catergory.

They're playing July 2-4 at Hugh's Room. It's the original "Hero and Heroine" line-up.

Early Genesis were pretty decent as well.

Good ole Martin Barre. Ah yes, Aqua Lung. The tights never did much for me though. And although I highly respect Ian Andersen's (sp?) skill on the flute, it didn't do much to further the machismo of the progressive movement. lol Not like the Flying V guitar did, anyway. ;)

It ain't often that you hear little boys asking mommy for flute lessons. But I digress.

It's too bad they didn't get wider recognition.

Man, you people sure ain't doin' "no pussyfooting" around when it comes to taste in music ... Eno was to ambient what Iggy was to punk, for lack of a better analogy.

I'm not sure what "progressive" encompasses, but Tangerine Dream I think deserve mentioning.

What about Gong ? ... Amon Düül ? ... Soft Machine seemed to be early pioneers of "progressive" rock ...

Eno did do a stint with/as 801 Live with Phil Manzanera and Simon Philips which was pretty cool. Anyone remember that one?

Surprised nobody mentioned Mike Oldfield and his single opus insert: Tubular Bells.

Shit 00s music

I am compiling a list of the greatest music artists of all time
I am a big fan of Colin Larkin's books and hope to publish a Top 1000 list sometime

PM if you are interested in helping even for 5 mins

My latest assignment is to figure out who these new "artists" are:
www.toronto-exotic-massage.com/NewMusic.htm
Do any deserve attention and who is Canadian?

My ranking factors in popularity including:
- the number of websites
- the number of google searches
This way the list will not be dominated by the favourites of the critics such as Captain Beefheart and Nike Drake

The number two position overall is pretty much up for grabs

at one time it was among my most played albums

In a similar vein and just to expand and reunite musical family trees of the aforementioned :

Kevin Ayers, June 1, 1974 Live featuring Eno, John Cale and Nico , as well as Robert Wyatt and Mike Oldfield

The twang bar king ?
