What provisions have you made in preparation for some sort of future disaster?

Have you done nothing at all? Have you got the 72 hours of food and water set aside, as recommended by the government? Have you gone above and beyond, and set aside provisions that would last for months? Are you one of those kooks who has a bomb shelter under his house, stocked up in preparation for nuclear war? Do you have a "go bag"? Are you getting ready for TEOTWAWKI, SHTF, or WROL?

How ready are you for a disaster?

Myself - I've only gone a little beyond the minimum recommended by the government and the red cross. I have set aside enough water for my wife and I for a week or so--about 40L in jugs stored in the laundry closet--and we have lots of non-perishable food in the cupboards. There's a bunch of other stuff I have just because I sometimes go camping. I have a camp stove, propane, a tent, sleeping bags, and that sort of thing, of which probably the stove would probably be most useful, but who knows. I've also got a good first aid kit. Basics like that. I own firearms, and I have ammunition (fuck you Adam Vaughan) though I would be loathe to load or even present a firearm, things would have to be really bad, because fundamentally at that point you're breaking the law, so things would have to be pretty bad to get to that point.

The most likely disaster to hit Toronto would be an extended power failure, either in winter, or in summer. Next up would be some unexpected natural disaster, like an ice storm, earth quake, or hurricane. I guess I have supplies that would last long enough for normality to return. Other somewhat less likely events, some sort of pandemic, some sort of terrorist attack, who knows. I'm not as ready as some of the real kooks out there. My first aid kit includes a couple of surgical masks, not really sure it would help.

What are you ready for?

I have the basics, first aid, water(probably not enough), food and propane, gas and sleeping bags too. Youu should have a couple huundred in cash handy as well. Surgical masks should be a part of a disaster survival kit, they should be N-95 masks in case of a pandemic and lots of alcohol based hand sanitizer.
In case of terrorist attack or a pandemic, you are probably safer the further from the hot zone, if safe to do so in terrorist attack.

I agree wholeheartedly when you say, "fuck you" to Adam Vaughan, when it comes to firearms.

Water is the most important one, and the one that probably most people miss. You can survive a long time with no food. Not so long with no water.

All I did was buy a couple of 10L jugs and some flats of 1.5L bottles from the grocery store, total of 40L (3L/day/person so that's just under a week's worth for two). Total cost of $16. Pre-sealed, sterile, with a best before date in 2014. Easy enough. You can refill them yourself from the tap if you really are arsed to save the $16, you just have to make sure to handle them carefully so they aren't contaminated in the process--to me, commercially bottled water was easier and cheap enough. I preferred several jugs/bottles over one huge one so that if I ever open one, I don't ruin the whole supply.

Okay once more with feeling;

Are there any Preppers in the crowd?

Some good points in this thread.

In the city, 30l frozen water, water filtration system/bottle of javex, various fire starters, wind up headlamps, radio and lanterns, batteries, syphon tube, candles, heavy and light weight mylar sheets, plastic sheeting/tarp, axe, knives and folding buck saw, two times of ropes, military spec duct tape, basic+ first aid. Finally, favorite comfort food (Eatmores), and two type (with heat and w/o heat) of MRE`s enough for 24 full meals.

Except for the frozen water and MRE cartons will fit into a medium duffle bag, with room for basic clothes. Weight 12kg.

In the country, not much different except the amount as there is more storage room, portable solar panel, self contained tool kit, the new edition is seeds, plus the firearm.

My family got the wake up call during the Eastern Ontario/Quebec ice storm.

You don't need MRE's unless you are planning to pack your food out on your back and eat it in a trench under fire.

For the rest of us, canned food, pasta, rice, will do. I have a camp stove, so I can heat it up. Costs about the same for a week's worth of food as one day of MRE. I have some nuts, dried fruit, and granola bars for snacking. If there's an emergency, I figure I will have lots of time, ample time to set up a camp stove, boil some water, and cook a hot meal.

Buying MRE's to prep for an emergency is like the mall cops who think they need a plate carrier in case they "sustain several hits of 308 in the back" while on "duty".

(Why do I suspect blackrock is actually gecko45?)

I am not as prepped as I wold like to be actually.

I start and then I get depressed at the idea of why I am doing it, and stop.

But given the year and all the hype, I think I should get my butt in gear, just to be on the save side.

I own an unlicensed firearm. If the worst happens, I plan to take supplies from those who stockpiled water and food.
So if we have a month long emergency like they had in Quebec, you're going to pull out the gn and rob folks, nice.

Just remember it's a two way street. There will be others wanting to the same to you.

From the title of this thread I thought it was "how do you prep for a session with an MPA/SP", I was ready to say "I run my goatee razor all around my privates to clean it up"; oh wait I guess I just did say that

Nonesense. Those of us with guns will band together to form a more perfect society based on unreasoning macho and armed might and then take it upon ourselves to fairly redistribute food and other necessities hoarded by the more "prepared". Oh ... and we'll shoot people who annoy us.

There are different levels of prepping obviously but minimally you should have a grab and go bag. This just has the basics. I knew a woman who was roused out of her house in the middle of the night when the the Sunrise propane plant exploded. They literally had to run out of the house, hop in the car and go. Then they weren't allowed to get back to their house for a few days. She said that a grab and go bag would have made all the difference. One of the kids didn't even have shoes because they forgot to grab them since they carried her right from her bed. What would you think of or forget at 3:00 a.m. under heavy stress? You may not have days of food an water in your bag but minimally it should get you into and surviving comfortably in a motel for a few days.

One item that I saw on a prep list that I often see forgotten is a book, deck of cards or a game of some sort. Just something to pass the time while you wait for help - made a lot of sense.

I have gotten the basics.

Batteries are important. I need to have enough for my toys after all. ;)

My favorite is a rechargeable. I think it may be a bit over board to buy a generator for just my toy though.

And when the apocalypse happens, I think you and I will be drinking my stash of Diet Dr Pepper whilst killing radiation-created albino mutants like in Omega Man.
And playing chess. Can't forget the chess.
