Well the power is up where I am (Downtown Toronto), but that's not what this thread is about. Without immediate access to the news media, what was your first thought? Come on be honest.

I have to admit, the first thought that came into my mind was a terrorist attack-My co-workers & I were all talkin about it. Scared the shit out of me until I got a phone call from someone out west who read me some news release about a fire at some power station in Niagara that was the genius of the blackout. Phew!!!

Yeah, first think that came to my mind, was terrorist attack, especially
with the radio DJ's having "special guests" insisting it was not. Sounded
like an extreme cover-up!

Anyway, even though I thought it was a terrorist attack, I couldn't care
less. If we die, then we die, there's nothing we can do about ;)

A terrorist attack was NOT the first thing I thought of. With this heat and humidity I thought it was a brown-out due to the overstressing of the power system. People are watching too much US media hyping up terrorism and spreading paranoia.

We really don't need all the airconditioning that we use, too many people have to have the inside temperature in the low 60's and it's just not necessary. I don't have central air, but I do have an airconditioner unit in the window, but I rarely use it. Keep the windows closed and the blinds shut (to reflect the heat back out) and accept the temperature in the low 70's.

Now, all that being said, when power didn't come on shortly there after my co-workers all started calling around to see how far it spread: nearby, far end of the city, Hamilton, Newmarket, New York. Once we realized the extent of the Black-out our first concern was:
1) getting home
2) how long will the power be out
3) get the flashlights and candles out
4) have enough stored water available
5) hope the food in the refridgerator and freezer does not go bad.

As far as this hobby is concerned I was wondering who was getting a lapdance, massage, or in a session with an SP when the lights went out?

An even better question, who took advantage of the black out
and had some nice extras when the bouncer couldn't see you :p

My first thought was the stress on the system.
I was surprised to hear that it happened through-out southern Ontario. I was shocked when I heard it effected people in the states, NY/C, Cleveland etc.
Then I hoped that people were safe and healthy.
I wished the power would go on before night time because of criminal activity.
Then I wondered how many babies were being made.
Watch in 9 months ... what will the headlines be ...

Amber

PS ... What did cause the blackout?
Why do they (the media) say blackout/brownout ... why not one or the other, why both?

I must say for a "split second" terrorism did cross my mind, but I'm with Hornet on this one. Media (especially CNN) does hype events ridiculously so.

Then, damn it I could not reach an sp who I did have an appointment with! One track mind or what! Apparently cell phones were out as well...

Let's see the Americans blamed us and we blamed them. Then I heard about the Blackout in 65 and the promises that were made so that something like this wouldn't happen again. Personally I think we'll never get the full truth as corporate CEOs and politicians spin doctor this to protect thier overpaid collective asses.

As for where I was....

I was on the golf course when it apparently went out, and the broad in the snack shop was spinning her web of terrorism because NYC was affected, and when I looked at her ignorant uneducated face and heard her words, I knew it wasn't terrorism.......I didn't think it was terrorism in the first place when I first heard, and when I saw the paranoia being bred, I knew it wasn't, just ridiculous. Then I did a crazy thing that the snack shop broad could have done, I turned on my radio to get some news........it was pretty simple, us greedy North Americans gobbling up the power like crazy.....lol.....just like we are supposed to do.

Not that difficult to figure out, really, one of the hottest days so far this year, A/C's cranking in every enclosure in the area, eventually might overstress the system. They'll fix it, promise us it's fixed for good, we'll be gullible to believe them, and 30 or 40 years later, or sooner, it will happen again. Oh well, no big deal, we live and learn to deal with it.

As for me, my ex found out I had power at 10pm last night and came over because she wanted to "watch TV"..........Lucky me, she wanted to make it up to me that she got to "watch TV". I hope they don't fix the system and it happens a few more times.

Either way, I hope all is good with everyone else.

Coolguy.

At first I really didn't think anything. Then as time wore on, and I called my local hydro office and discovered the extenet of the problem, all I could think of was some Homer Simpson like guy, drinking beer and spilling it all over the command console. Terrorism never crossed my mind until someone told me that they heard it was a terroroist attack. But if it was, what the heck were they waiting for??!! So I dismissed it pretty quickly.

Americans didn't blame you so come off the bullshit. Your prime minister's office released a statement saying there was a lightning strike at the Niagra plant. For Christs sake, let's stop with the damned hypersensitivity.

Marge: "Homer, it's the Nuclear Power Plant calling, they say that if you don't come in today, not to bother coming in Monday!"

Homer: "Woo hooooo, 4 day weekend!"

That was the best.

EBS, it's Niagara... and many US stations were in fact suggesting that the source of this blackout originated in Ontario.

News reports this morning in Niagara stated that there was no lightining strike anywhere near 100 miles of the Niagara region (especially on a day with no disturbing weather activity reports in sight).

My point is it's "ridiculous to blame" any province, state or country. It's a reality so deal with it.

That being said several American news stations including CNN and Mayor of New York repeatedly did blame Canada.

Thank god we are a nation of manners and diplomacy!

Let the flames begin....
