PORT DARLINGTON, ONT. - About 500 people were evacuated from Port Darlington in southern Ontario Tuesday night after what appeared to be an explosion and fire at a waterfront propane plant.
The town, 80 km east of Toronto on Lake Ontario, was buffeted by a steady stream of explosions for 40 minutes, a witness said.
A fireball lit up the sky and residents thought the Darlington nuclear plant, about 5 km from the town, had caused the explosion, the CBC's James Murray reported.
Police said they were not aware of any injuries, and firefighters were fighting the blaze.
It appeared to start at about 8:30 p.m., and was still burning fiercely three hours later.
Volunteers have been going into the community and assisting in the evacuation, said Sgt. Paul Malik, a police spokesman.
Residents are going to stay with friends and family or are being sent to the a recreation centre in the nearby town of Bowmanville.
Witnesses said the explosion and blaze looked like rockets going off, with towering flames reaching into the night sky.
Roads are clogged, and Highway 401, the main route that runs east-west just north of the lake, was closed.
Power was cut to the south part of Bowmanville.
