Mark Prior was pitching a gem of a game. Through the 7th inning, six outs away sending the Chicago Cubs to their first World Series since 1945, they were ahead 3-0.

One out in the 8th inning, still 3-0 with Florida in the lead, there is a questionable play involving a foul ball and a fan, costing the Cubs one more out. Prior is on pitch 110 for the night, and then the inevitable happens.

Florida starts to hit him. Hard. Its now still the same 8th inning, only 2 outs, and its now 8-3 Florida. I'm beginning to think the Cubs truly are America's Lovable Losers, destined to always tease and disappoint their loyal fans.

Only reason I'm posting this is because hockey season has started and many of you have long forgotten baseball. LOL!

Base-ball? Is that like football?

I hope the guy who fucked with the ball enters the witness relocation program.

They showed him so many times that everyone who knows him, saw him. He may have to enter a relocation program. The cubbies are cursed.

the only thing that got me interested in baseball again was when I heard about the fights between the socks and the yanks.... then I went back to hockey

They escorted (no not like that) the guy out before the game finished, and everyone was throwing shit at him.
Bottom line it's not the fan's fault. Yes he interfeered with a play and should be thrown out. But I've never seen a meltdown like that before. The Cubs just collapsed. Maybe the pressure is getting to them but you don't win the Series doing things like that.

doc (still hoping for Cub and Sox in the Series)

Two points:

1. From strictly a scorekeeping standpoint, if we assume that Alou would have caught the ball, it was out #2. The subsequent sacrifice fly would have been out #3, and at that point in the game the score was tied 3-3.

2. From a momentum standpoint however, that interference was the turning point in the game. The Marlins got an "extra out", and the Cubs were visibly discouraged and lost focus. That loss of focus led to the onslaught and 8-3 loss.

It is split second reaction and instinct to reach for the ball, the poor guy was obviously a diehard Cubs fan (cap, headphones), and certainly did not mean to cost his team the game. Even The outfielder said afterwards that its just one of those things.

But man, you cant help but think there must be some curse to snatch defeat from the hands of victory like that!

The error by Gonzalez was more damaging, although the fan incident is keeping the error barely mentioned. The Cubs will pull it out tonight - Wood is destined to pull this off. Jesus, for the first time in probably ten years Baseball is kinda exciting again. Being from Detroit, I've been estranged from baseball for quite a long time.

:) Yeah, the Boys of Summer haven't seen the sun in a while. But we've got the Wings, and I'd take having a shitty baseball team and the Mighty Red Wings than having the Blue Jays and the Leafs...heh heh heh...

the guy probably feels terrible. The ball was in the stands...it's not like he reached out into fair territory. Another thing that's being glossed over is the fact that about 20 other fans were also reaching for that ball. You can argue he shouldn't have tried to catch it, but the ball was landing in the stands, and anyone in his position would have been focused on that ball and not on Alou, who was running to the wall from the field. It's unfortunate, and I'm sure the fan feels really bad. He was probably so excited to just be at that game, and now it's ruined.

His arm wasn't in the field of play when his hand collided with Alou's...that's where his arm ended up. The ball was in the stands when it came down.

*dons Physics cap, grabs calculator*

DenWa: If you look at where the ball is in that picture above, say it's approx 4 inches into foul territory. Given that the ball would not have bounced straight up after hitting Mr. Bartman's hand, and given the orientation of the foul line (clearly visible) the logical conclusion is that the ball was actually roughly where Mr. Bartman's hand was, or at the very least where Alou's glove was, hence in the field of play.
