Pool Question!

For those who know about pools!

My neighbor has been taking care of my pool while I am away, I just received an email from him stating that while cleaning the filter basket at the pump, he found handfuls of pebbles, now the mesh of the basket filter located next to the pool itself is pretty fine, so I don't see how pebbles could have gotten through there.

I have had this pool for 8 years, and maintain it very well, however, I have never seen this. Should I be concerned of a broken pipe maybe?

Any clarity would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Crap, I have actually found lately that the water in the pump basket not as full as I am used to seeing it, I thought it may have been air getting in by accident while vacuuming the pool. Could that happen?

the pump basket should be full to the top no air at all! if you get air in when vacuuming it will go through the system in a few mjns. if air is getting in you have a leak or the seal on the filterbasket is poor if it is the seal vasaline is a good fix

Thanks! I will check that when I get back, but it's the pebbles that concern me right now! Any ideas?

normally the drain at the bottom of the pool goes to the pool filter basket and then back to the pump filter and pump(suction side) then to the filter, heater and back to the pool (pressure side) depending on who did the install and the land drainage where you live it was backfilled with gravel, sand or a combination. could be that gravel.......could also be somone had a party and it was kids......

Don't know where 'pebbles' would even come from!
Had a pool for 11 years with a Diatomaceous Earth filter and never had any pebbles! A sand filter has no pebbles either. Someone had to put them pebbles in the pool, to have them wind up in the basket.

Yeah, just called my neighbor and it's gravel, not pebbles. Should I be worried?
1. does you pool have a center bottom drain?
2. if there is a center drain there must be a cover screen on the drain.
- is the gravel found big enough to fit through the drain screen.
-no- then you could have a leak...but I doubt that as it is under constant suction and a hole big enough would allow more water outand your pool level would drop noticibly.
-yes- if the gravel does fit through the drain screen then most likely some one has noticed you away and thrown gravel into your pool....hoping they would do damage.

3- does your filter run 24/7 or do you have it on a timer?
- timers are best to run your pool fron sunrise until sunset..any time other than that is a wate of energy and cools the pool down.
- maybe some one is fed up with the noise from your filter system and wants to damage it to stop the noise.

yep sounds like the backfill around the pool -at least it is the vacume side you are not pumping water into the ground! call a pool company you trust and get the lines pressure tested

This is probably the best advice for peace of mind.

Does your pump run 24/7? If it doesn't I would think that any hole in your line big enough to allow gravel in would allow a fair bit of water to run out when the pump wasn't running. Have you had to add more water than usual? (Given all the rain this year I would think you'd be having to drain water out rather than make it up)

My pool does not have the drain at the bottom, the filter is located in the pool house, which is always locked, yes, the pump runs 24/7, but with the pump room door closed, and the pool house door closed, you can't hear a thing. I have a pool guy meeting my neighbor tomorrow, hopefully it's not a leak!

Thanks everyone!
