The Race Is On According To Poll

Posted By: Katie Franzios kfrazios@astral.com · 10/13/2010 4:00:00 PM

The race is on for those vying for the mayor's chair.

After months of Rob Ford being ahead in the polls there's been a switch.

The Ipsos Reid poll conducted for Newstalk 1010 shows George Smitherman is now leading the pack, even if it's only with a slight edge.

He now has 31 percent support, skyrocketing up eight points from a few weeks ago, overtaking front-runner Rob Ford, who has 30 per cent. Joe Pantalone is a distant third with 11 per cent support and Rocco Rossi falls further behind with four per cent support. 25 per cent are undecided.

It's a tie for gaining popularity and momentum, Smitherman and Ford are both at 31 per cent, followed by Pantalone and Rossi.

However, things aren't as neck-and-neck when considering those who will actually go out and vote on election day, with Smitherman has 38 percent support. Ford trails by six points, followed by, again, Pantalone (15%) and Rossi (3%). 17 per cent are undecided.

(Note: It doesn't mention it in this story, but this was a poll of 400 people, with a reported margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 per cent)

When I hear George Smitherman's name it always, brings back memories of the eHealth spending scandal . . . at one billion dollars, most of these transgressions occurred under his stewardship from 2003 until 2008 . . . IMO this guy is grossly incompetent!

If Smitherman wins, he'll most certainly be a disaster.

It sounds like there will be more polls coming this weekend. It will be interesting to see what they say.

interesting thing about pols , this one will motivate the ford supporters to answer the pols so there might be a shift, the only one that really matters is in two weeks, the winner will be the one who actually gets all his supporters out to the voting booths, answering a question is easy , getting your ass off the couch apparantly is not.

It'll likely motivate everyone, I think in a tight rate all candidate's voters are likely to step up a bit more. Ford supporters will see it as a challenge, formerly discouraged Smitherman supporters will be heartened and see it as an opportunity.

Significantly it may also motivate some of Pantalone's supporters to switch and vote strategically, as the race is increasingly presentd as a Ford vs. Smitherman race. Even if Pants does not drop out some of his supporters are likely to be motivated to oppose Ford.

After Pants quote from Wednesday that Smitherman would do more damage than Ford?

Ford's losing steam, perhaps people are finally getting sick of the negative campaign he's been running (i.e., all rage and no plan).

Toronto is heading for a fiscal diseaster with Smitherman becoming a Mayor. Smitherman is a scumbag, crook, indirectly responsible for the C difficle death when he was a health Minister. This scumbag homosexual is so incompentant ... he will enjoy fucking the Toronto Taxpayer !!! Look for out more increases in taxes , fees and increase spending in Toronto with this slimy scumbag in charge. Billions of more dollars will be waste with him at the helm. Fuji must be extremely happy...with this poll result. Fuji are you related to Smitherman? Why are you so pro Smitherman?

Anyone who votes for Smithers needs their head examined. I'd have more respect if you voted for Pantalone instead. At least he doesn't talk out of both sides of his mouth.

I am going onto a limb here, and perhaps someone with more political knowledge can answer. But traditionally, voters who are right and centre right are more inclined to vote rather than their left wing counterparts?
