BARRIE, ONT. -- Provincial police charged 19 people with stunt driving over the weekend in one community.

"Speed kills. There's no excuse. Slow down!" The OPP Central Region posted to Twitter Wednesday morning.

According to OPP, all 19 infractions happened on Caledon roads.

"Walker Road was one of the areas officers conducted enforcement on this past weekend. Happy to say during the time officers were there, no stunt drivers were charged," police tweeted.

Walker Road is a 'hot spot' for speeding, according to police.

Stunt drivers on Ontario roads will now be hit with stricter penalties under the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act that came into effect on July 1.

Motorists clocked travelling 40 km/h or more over the speed limit in a posted 80 km/h zone will face stunt driving charges.

Drivers could face a 30-day immediate licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

Penalties still aren’t strict enough IMHO.

Not even close. The should literally the same as impaired driving. I would argue even harsher in sense that some people who are charged with impaired, might have blown just barely over, and were trying to drive safe. Stunt driving, your consciously driving unsafe.

I see it every single time I'm on one of hour freeways. Today on DVP, BMW doing about 160 weaving in and out of traffic. I'm in the right lane, he passed me in left, then passes the next guy in the left, then back over all the way to the right, then we hit a bit of traffic. Does all that and is now stuck in traffic two cars a head of me. The best part they're nice enough to signal while they do this.

I wish we had about 20-30 OPP constables that they're job was to drive up and down DVP and 401 all day long looking for drivers like this, then ding them with harsh penalties.

Speeding is going a tiny bit over the limit. Your going 40 over, your racing which for all intense of purposes is stunt driving.

Speeding on city roads is the result of poor engineering or poorer regulations. likely, it’s due to an incompetent city council that carelessly lowered the speed limit in an area because of poor zoning considerations changed the risk factors.

proper traffic design shouldnt need speed enforcement.

unfortunately, Ontario is in the Stone Age when it comes to considerations of the Highway Traffic Act....

Caledon detachment OPP are known to be overly aggressive twats for speed enforcement. There are several areas in Caledon that the limit got dropped from 60 to 40 overnight, instead of a more reasonable 50 km/h. You can guess where they like to sit with the radar gun ready. They're not very good at solving other crimes, but good at tax collecting anyway.

Speeding excessively such as 40km over the limit should garner a 1 year driving ban. It's reckless and dangerous.

Really ? Lol
You're cruising at 120 on the highway, the speed limit drops to 80, boom, you're done

I'm wondering how the people on here will feel when they're passing and an officer clocks them doing 120km/h and they lose their license for 30 days.
Don't get me wrong, I think 120km/h is bad, and merits a hefty fine. But immediate loss of license? Vehicle impoundment? Really?! You could pull out and pass at a dangerous part of the road, and force another driver off the road, and you still won't have your license immediately suspended, or your car impounded. For a far more dangerous action.

This is just more bullshit pandering, that won't make roads safer.

Lower you speed. It's not hard. Not to mention, I've never seen a section of freeway in my life in Ontario that goes from 120 that drops to 80.

Everyone does 120 on the highway
You go slower and you're creating a hazard

400 when it ends at black creek, drops to 70 in a heartbeat before the highway ever ends. Cops hide right there and many people have lost their license at that exact same spot.

410 where it ends at hurontario

427 north where it ends, same thing just to name a few

All above are the same highway, same amount of lanes as wherethe speed limit is 100, only difference is the drop in speed limit.
Hardly worth losing your license over, but hey, whatever illusion of safety helps your mind

Of course the limit drops there...lol. The freeway is ending and they're telling you slow down because that...lol.

Good job taking things out of context. Bottom line, way to many people driving way over the speed limit in this province, and something needs to be done about it. Sounds like you might be one of those people.
